Hey all,

Recently purchased a new American Fender 62 reissue Jazzmaster. I can't remember how I installed the tremolo arm, but now I'd like to be able to easily remove it before I put it in my case.

I read the manual and other documentation, but it makes no clear mention of whether or not the Jazzmaster's tremolo arm is threaded or simply popped in.

I've tried pulling on the arm, but I'm afraid to pull too hard, don't want to break anything.

I've also tried turning the arm 360 degrees counter-clockwise several times, but it just makes a high pitched squeaking noise. I also get a bit of a squeaking when I use the arm while playing.

I'm afraid I may have installed the arm improperly.

Is there a surefire way of safely removing the tremolo arm or should I take this to a guitar tech?

Thanks

You need to push in and pull out hard in the beginning, mine did the same thing. Just give it a good straigh pull out and it should pop out easily.

Hi, thanks for the reply. I tried what you're suggesting, when when I push down and pull the bar up hard, I hear a pop, but the arm doesn't come out. It's like it comes up slightly, but I'm afraid to pull too hard. I put a lot of strength into it too.

When you say to push in, do you mean push down at the point where the tremolo arm is inserted, or push down on the end of the arm as if I were using it while playing, and then pull out?

Don't be scared to try anything. You have to take risks some times in life....... If it does not work, try it again, but push down hard and pull up in one fluid motion. :D By the way, welcome to the Fender Forum! :)

Hey there,

Did you succeed in any of your attempts to pull the damn thing out?
Have the same problem with my new Jazzmaster AVRI and wondered
if I'm just not pulling hard enough...

Thanks.

I have a brand new '62 reissue Jazzmaster and when I inserted the tremolo arm into it's place, it seemed impossible to remove. The tech at the store where I purchased it from told me to slide and hold the little button with one hand while exerting a little upward tension on the arm where it enters it's slot. That did it; it came right out.

Hi there, I assume you mean slide and hold the tremolo lock button, did you "lock" it or slide it to its unlocked position?

I'm not sure I understand what you mean, since the tremolo lock button seems to hold itself whereever you move it?

I'll fool around with it and see if I can get the arm out. Mine is still stuck in there, and I haven't had time/money to take it to a tech. I've tried pulling extremely hard, but it doesn't come out with a fast/hard pull.

Why don't you just leave the arm in place? I leave mine on the guitar when it is in the case.

Hey Oshjay,

When I put the arm in, I don't remember seing the button move, so I can only say that it was towards the bridge when I tried it; and in that position nothing happened. I slid it over towards the tail and then tugged on the arm, which is when it came out.

It's also possible that I didn't push the arm in all of the way, which may be why it came out so easily for me. Currently the button is still towards the tail (I just checked before typing).

The sliding button, when spring tension is properly adjusted, locks the trem from exerting more pull if a string breaks. This keeps the other strings from rising in pitch - in tune.
I have a question of my own: When inserting the arm, it has no natural stop point. I'm able to push it in so far that it can stop downward travel of the tremelo. Could I be missing a part?
The Jag/JM trem can cause headaches but it is a unique and great sounding, good performing tremelo unlike any other.
By the way, the webrocker.de/jaguar site is a goldmine of info on these wonderful guitars.

i am having the same problem with my jazzmaster. i put the tremolo arm on when i got it and took it off and no problem. i put it on yesterday and since i don't use it that much i was going to take it off and i can't get the arm off. i'm waiting on a call from a guitar tech but it may be awhile before i hear from him - i tried the little trick in the previous post and it did not work - i think if i get the thing out i'm never going to worry with it again.

I had this problem also. I followed an earlier post's advice about the tremolo button and it worked. Move the round button near the tremo to the left, ie, towards the neck of the guitar, away from the tremolo, then pull the tremolo bar out. It worked for me. I wouldn't force it too much. If you're pulling hard and it doesn't come out that probably means it's locked in place.

That being said, I'm a Jazzmaster novice also and will confirm this with a guitar tech I know who's more knowledgeable about Jazzmasters.
