Well, you can tell by my screen name what my answer is. I owned a 1967 Jaguar, and loved it for years. I really beat it up, and eventually sold it. When the tech I sold it to took off the neck, he found the inspector's initials written in pencil: LF ! (Who could that have been??)

Anyway, I worked with a band that had no bass player (but we did have a chick on Hammond M3 who had an amazing pedal technique). Still, I liked to set up the Jaguar with the upper selector switch in the UP position and the volume and tone set for a bass-y sound. Then, whenever we played a tune that needed some extra bottom, I could double the bass on the lower strings. Otherwise, I kept that selector switch in the DOWN position and had it set-up for a clean, trebly, rhythm sound. It was simple to switch back and forth between the two completely different sounds, and I did so often, sometimes within a tune!

The Jag's short scale makes it easier to play longer intervals, like in some blues comps.

I really miss my old Jaguar!

Gotta go with the JazzMaster. I have a 197? with the Big Block inlays. Love the way it plays and sounds. I've played my Strat and liked it, but I always go back to my JazzMaster. The Jag is ok, too, but nothing like the Jazz.

I first played a Jazzmaster when I was 23 and I never forgot how it sounded or felt in my hands. I'm a rhythm player , no more no less. When I turned 51 I was able to buy a new American Made RI 62 Jazzmaster and never have regretted it. You have two things to decide. What style your going to play lead or backup. The Jag has a fast neck and ripping sounds available but no full body sound.
Just remember, no matter what people tell you, in the end you'll do what you feel you must do.
Good Luck
