Fender Standard Telecaster, or Fender Standard Stratocaster would be my suggestion. Both Made In Mexico, and both currently retailing at $400.00. If you're willing to try out a bunch (including more expensive Teles and Strats), you'll eventually find that sweet one that sounds and plays every bit as good as the ones costing twice, even three times what the Standards cost. Some people try for something that sounds and plays better, but I like to keep things a tad easier with the benchmark of "as good as the more expensive ones."

If a Made In Mexico Fender is still beyond what you're looking to spend, start trying the Squier Telecasters and Squier Stratocasters, even all the way down to the Affinity series, if you have to. Do, however, still try the Fenders, so that you'll have an "as good as" reference toward finding that one sweet Squier.

Matt

It depends of your meaning of ''cheap''. For some people, an American Stratocaster is cheap :? , for others, it is a ''dream guitar''. It's sure that an USA Fender :D is way more interesting than a Squier or than a Mexican, but if you don't want to pay for it, it is your choice. You must say how much you want to pay for your guitar if you want someone to help you.

Looking for a cheap guitar huh? well you should look for affinity series, the squier strat is a pretty decent and affordable guitar, you con get the pack which includes a small amp for around $200 or so (at least that's the price in my country) or if you want to go lower, the squier bullet is for you, according to fender its their cheapest guitar, thats what i read on a frontline magazine, in fact I own one, its tricky in some ways tough, and changing strings is quite a challenge, anyways i love my bullet and thats my suggestion jejeje. Cheers

Fender? played a huge role in creating solid body guitars and making them widely available. One of their most popular models, the Fender? Stratocaster, or Strat for short was the first electric guitar with a solid body. Each year, they expand on their current guitar line while still making those old favorites available.

I was an acoustic player who found myself in the same boat about a year ago, I wanted an electric without paying big bucks.

I bought a Squier Standard Series Strat used for $100, it rocks, sounds good, plays well, stays in tune. I'd highly recommend it. It's also in the Cherryburst finish which is pretty rare I guess and I love that too.

Got it on Evil-bay, a place to check, just check the seller out before buying.

I have two friends with Squire Teles and both love them ... they play well, decent construction quality. They're both fairly close to my Highway 1 (US made) 2002 model Fender Tele in sound and quality.

I'll have to "me too" on trying various levels before deciding, but I'd bet you'll like one of the Squire models and they're in your price range.

Try the high end Squiers. The Classic Vibe Series. OR the Deluxes. Strat bodies. Try any of the Squiers. Can't beat em for the money.

Or watch ebay for an MIM strat. $300 will get you a pretty nice MIM strat, if you aren't looking for a particular color/fretboard combination. Check local pawn and music shops. You can get lucky there too.

Heck you can buy a whole new setup, amp and all for less than $300 with the Squier packs. Not the best in the world, but not junk either. A good starting guitar that you can mod or sell as you get better.

Good luck
Randy

Go to the store, sit down and play a bunch in your price range.
If you dig it, it's yours.
Only you can be the judge.

Try a Mustang! Also check my comments called 'Mustang', which I posted on September 24th, 2008. There I describe how the guitar sounds.

You might also look for a used MIM Thinline (EBay, Craigslist). I have the 72 repro with the humbuckers and it has a very nice sound for an inexpensive guitar. Great for blues and you might do classic rock or even some jazz with it.

The construction quality is reasonable, stays in tune fairly well and I find it "fast enough" unless you need to do blindingly fast metal style leads. Overall, considering the price point, it's one of my favorite guitars and in fact I often reach for it over a number of more expensive ones.
