I'm no guitar expert, in fact, I don't even play, so please forgive my utter lack of knowledge....

I have a mid-late 1960s Fender Jaguar. It was my father's and it laid in the original case under his bed for 30 years or so. As such, its neck is severely warped. On top of that, my idiot cousin tried to do a restoration himself and he screwed it up even more. I guess my question is, is it possible to completely restore a guitar of this age and in this condition and get it back into playing shape? Thanks for any help. Much appreciated!

We'll need to see photos for a comprehensive assessment.

Since it's already been screwed up by the idiot cousin, a trip to a very good pro is in order.

But I'd like to see pics, too. 8)

Hey all, thanks for the replies. I took some pics, and you can see the neck is so warped that the strings are touching the fret board, while the pickups are all kinds of screwed up. anyways, like i said, i took pics, but posting images to this forum seems super convoluted. if anyone is will to share their email, i'll pass them along that way. thanks!

"..the neck is so warped that the strings are touching the fret board, "

- IMO you may need to unscrew the trussrod ( loosen ) as soon as possible.

Post picture, yes it is the worst forum for picture

How to post photo as read on Fender Forum

https://forums.fender.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=109081

First you need to upload your pics to the internet. From a great forum member ; Jmattis

Use a pic hosting site (imgur, imgbb, flickr or such - avoid photobucket) or some common web framework like e.g. facebook, googlephotos - whatever you're familiar with.

The important thing is that the web site provides you with a pic address - that's the one starting with 'http' and ending in '.jpg'.

Copy the pic address, and use the IMG-command (visible when you write a message) on the forum.

Preview your post so everything is OK.

Or bring the strings up to pitch.
A lot of people think they are doing the right thing by detuning for storage.
Either may be the correct advice, but we are talking to someone who is not a player and does not know what a truss rod is or how to properly adjust it. You and I can make this correction in our sleep.

Yes, the guitar is likely easily restorable unless idiot brother changed parts or cut something.
But in the hands of the person caring for it now, it is best to take it to a professional for evaluation and repair.

The good news is that the chances that it can be restored are very high.
The cost will vary depending on how much work is needed, but it is highly likely you will have it back to the way your father would have liked it.

Good luck.
