Hi! I am new to this forum, I joined to find out more information on a 1940's Fender Dual Professional Lap Steel left to me by my grandfather. It is in very good condition, in its original case. It has the finger pick's and steel, which I assume he purchased with the guitar. There is also a folder of old "Hawaiian" lap steel music.

Does anyone know how much this may be worth? How can I get it appraised?

There are many variations on this guitar. Roman numeral versus arrowhead fret marks, blond finish versus walnut, rectangular(boxcar) versus trapezoidal pickups, 6 string versus 8 string. Also condition is very critical.

If you need valuation for insurance purposes, and are willing to pay for the appraisal, go to Gruhn Guitars website. Just be aware that, while you will be insurable for what they rate it at, if you yourself try to sell the guitar , you will only be able to get between 50 and 75% of what Gruhn says it is worth. I've known several people that subsequently tried to sell their guitar for the valuation, and got mad when nobody would buy it. It just doesn't work that way.

The vintage Guitar price guide is located at this link, and the page shows your guitar:

Two just sold on Ebay for around $1000 and there are several for sale around the country (just sitting because they are priced too high) for $2000 or $2500.

If you need real world info, go to www.b0b.com and enter the Steel Guitar Forum. Go to Steel without Pedals and there are a lot of knowledgable people there.

In the interest of full disclosure, I am actively seeking one of these to use with my band. That's why I know so much about pricing them. If you decide to sell yours, please contact me immediately. I am trying to impress you with my honesty here in hopes that you might feel like cutting me a deal. LOL.

Best of luck on finding out what you have inherited.
