Hey guys, thought I'd post this oldie :D

Image

That isn't my actual guitar, mine is in much better condition. I have the original case that came with too!

I'm lucky to have this, since it's one of the '65 models. My dad gave this to me my 7th Christmas, if not even sooner than that. Everything on the guitar is the original - the body, paint, neck, bridge, pickups. Everything. I want to tune the thing up, but I don't want to get rid of it's vintage feel. aha.

I thought about asking a vintage guitar team to help me find the value of this thing, but I might just end up holding on to this thing for awhile longer.

Tell me what you think!

Unless you are in dire need of cash or have some other compelling reason for selling it, I would hold on to it.

I'll never forgive myself for selling my '71 Mustang. I had the local guitar shop order it straight from the old Fullerton factory because I didn't like the Competition models hanging in the shop. Ordered it with a sunburst finish and classic gray hardshell case with the orange plush lining. They still had the pearloid p/g back then. A few years ago I tried to replace it, but prices have soared. I loved that guitar.

Whatever you decide, just be sure about it.

I have what I guess you'd call the exact negative of your guitar. Mine is a Duosonic II, also make in '65, but red pick guard with Olympic white body. I have the origincal case and strap. I had to refret, but other than that it's still as it was hanging on that wall while I mowed lawns and shoveld snow - took a long time - to buy. Sounds fantastic with slightly heavier gauge D'darrios. I'd love to find a red mustang from the same era. You'll regret selling it.

I am in a similar quandary. 65 or 66 musicmaster II. I bought it in 83. Had been refinished to natural. tortoise shell pickguard, white pickup. So what I see on the 'net says it should have been white. When inside, it looks to have been red. I haven't been in it lately to see if it could have been repainted red between the white and natural.

But.... I want a new strat. So, do I sell it or trade it in? Don;t really want to.

Do I leave it as is? It is missing the original neckplate, so I have no serial number. Just a blank chrome plate. But who would really fake a musicmaster? Everything else is Fender parts. I'm not wild about the natural finish, necessarily. Do I add a second pup and have a duosonic clone? Mustang pickguards are easy enough to find.

Do I restore it to red or white? Or was it red and has a replacement pickguard. There is really no way to tell what was original. It coulda been some kinda special red with toroise shell pickguard, but no way to document that, is there? Again, the option of second pup is there.

What to do? I don;t see it leaving the house. I do have a "silver" case with no Fender markings, not sure if the interior would be considered red or orange. The outside has black ends. Looks like pics of a fender tolex, but one place said that that vintage case is white. I'd defintiely call mine silver.

So yeah, I can understand you guys' feelings. What do you do?

For now I'm keeping it. I can still swing a MIM strat and keep the MMII. not sure what i'll do to it. It sure plays good and would be really sweet witih a bridge pup, too.

I'm not thw world's expert, but maybe you can use what little I know. first, your case sounds exactly like mine - silver with little black specks; inside is dark orange with a black plastic strap that holds the neck into its cradle. Mine has white pickups. The red pickguard is tortise shell (red and black mostly). Since yours has already been refinished, you might as well look inside to see the original paint (might have to scrape a bit off the inside of the pickup hole) and get it repainted to original. When you say the serial number plate is blank, do you mean the number has been removed (via drilling out, filing, whatever)? If so, yours was probably a guitar sold by a non-Fender authorized dealer. You can usually tell the year at the bottom of the neck when it is removed from the guitar (not always). I have only one other Fender - a 2000 American Deluxe. It's a personnal thing, of course, but I can highly recommend this guitar with its noiseless pickups and all the other features. I found mine on e-Bay for 6 bills plus. It has a transluscent red finish - you can see the wood grain underneath. Until I find a Mustang (II), this will be my last Fender. A friend of mine has a '57 reissue sunburst and it's really nice. Good luck!

The neckplate is a blank chrome square plate. Like someone pirated the original for use on something else. I meant to look at the pics I took of the guitar last time I had it apart. I have the date from the neck on my home computer. When I had it apart last, I did not know the color combos, only that they were available in red, white, blue. But the tortoise pg shouldn't go with the red body, which is what mine was painted last before someone redid it in natural. Could be white under that or it could have been red and the pg has been changed out in it's history. It's a mystery that will probably never be solved. No big deal. Just trying to figure out what I really want to do with it. It would look nice in an original white finish.

Thanks
Randy
