I have a Stagemaster HSS and am thinking of replacing the neck singlecoil with a Seymour-Duncan Little '59 humbucker. Has anyone had any experience with singlecoil sized humbuckers? Would hate to spend the money on the upgrade and then not have a noticable improvement but don't want to route out the wood to make room for a full sized neck humbucker either.

Also, I bought it used and someone had replaced the stock black singlecoils with green ones - don't know if it was a performance upgrade or if they just liked the color - haven't found anything on green pickups. Anyone know anything about them?

As far as single coil sized humbuckers are concerned, they are the way to go if you're dealing with a direct mount guitar like the stagemaster. They don't quite have the exact same characteristics as the full sized versions, but they are going to get the job done in a pinch.
The green pickups could be just about anything. Probably Dimarzios... I know they offer green covers for their pickups (they can be swapped on most of their single coils. The Stacked Humbuckers take a different size cover due to the fact that they are "deeper"). If you remove the pickups there should be a sticker on the bottom to give you the specifics. Usually a "DP" followed by the number. If there isn't any mark on the bottom it will be tough to identify the pickup.
The '59 is a nice neck pickup and that could be a good match for your guitar. I've been curious to hear the single sized Pearly Gates. The full one is one of my current favorites but it's always a little tricky to duplicate in the smaller version. Let us know what you find under those pickups and also how you make out with the neck pickup. Just remember, when it comes to wiring, the color codes are different on the Dimarzios and the Seymour Duncans. Not too tough to figure out though.

Right now the neck and mid are noisy but together cancel it out fine. If I don't have a singlecoil in the neck, will the mid cancel out with the mini humbucker or am I going to need a pushpull pot to switch the neck from singlecoil to humbucker? I would want to do that anyway but since it doesn't have a pickguard I'm going to have to get to everything from the back. It's an HSS and the mid won't cancel with the bridge - if it is too noisy by itself and won't cancel with the neck or bridge then might as well not use the mid at all and rewire the switch to give me the option of running neck/bridge. There again, without a pickguard I'd have to do the switch from the back too and it looks harder to get to than the pots.

So would I be better off going to a pushpull pot for the neck or changing to a noiseless mid? I play a mixture of country, folk, bluegrass, Praise & Worship, and classic rock - been playing acoustic over 30 years but just switched to electric this year - not interested in taking up shredding at this point in my life and have no interest in distortion or overdriving. Just clean fingerpicking and chording.

Thanx

Another option would be going with a five-way superswitch. This would allow you to keep the single in the middle and when the the switch is in the 2 and 4 positions combine the single with only one of the coils of either the neck or bridge humbuckers. I had an Ibanez with the H-S-H setup and it worked out pretty well for me. Fender has a number of guitars that use this switching also and if you check their support section, they give you very easy to follow wiring diagrams.

I got an HSS strat, and I installed a siglecoil sized humbucker. It's a Dimarzio pro track, It sounds really nice. It makes a good match with the Tone Zone humbucker on the bridge. I've not tried Duncan pickups, but I guess they will do a good job too.
