Post subject:  Cure my G.A.S. - Jaguar, Jazzmaster or Mustang 90?

I've got serious G.A.S. again and need a new guitar, and I really really want an offset this time. It's going to be a sit on the sofa and plunk around guitar, not my main so I'm looking into the Player series mostly for cost reasons, but I want a Fender not a Squire.

I love the look of the Jag and Jazzmaster. I like the Mustang/Duo Sonic simply because I cut my teeth on a Music Master back in the early 70's and I'm getting old so nostalgia is a thing now lol.

Aside from the scale length and PuPs, are there other differences between the jag and JM from a playability perspective? Again speaking about Player Series, are the necks the same carve? I have searched everywhere and I can't find a Jag in any stores. I've played around with a JM and liked it. Many of the YT vids I've seen on the Jag make it sound really trebly, worse than my Texas Special pups on my Strat. Is it really that chimey, or can that treble be tamed a bit?

Also one last question about scale length. Is it a big adjustment on a short scale guitar? All my other instruments have been 25 or 25.5.

If anyone has thoughts on the Players Series, or one of the newer Mustangs or Duo's, I'd love to hear them.

Thanks!

AJ

Same adjustments, scale length have nothing to do with adjustments.
Shorter scale need less tension on string and you may find easier to play

A must to learn ;

Hi Stratele52,

What I meant was, is it an adjustment from a playing perspective going back and forth between 25.5 and 24 inch scale guitars.

Cheers

Ah! Ok I understand.
It is like playing on a Fender and a Gibson, no problem.

I have them all , few Fender, few Gibson, '60 Jazzmaster, '60 Jaguar :D

Good to know. I'm really torn between the Player Jaguar and the Classic Player JM. I love the JM tone but the truss adjustment in the back is a pain, and I worry it's a one trick pony. The Jag is short and sweet, but I worry about it being too brittle sounding. I had a Strat with Texas Specials in it and it was just way too bright for my liking.

Decisions decisions......

Go play the shorter scale Fenders at a local music store. 24" scale is great for small hands and can make jazz chords more accessible. If you play past the 12th fret a lot, the frets will be a lot closer than on a Strat or Tele.

John Lennon's Rickenbacker had a very short scale which I'm sure helped him reach and create some of those early iconic Beatles' guitar riffs. For example, the chord riffs in "I Feel Fine." Try that on a Strat and then on a short scale neck guitar. Huge difference unless you have long fingers.

As for the truss rod adjustment at the body, not really a big deal. Loosen the strings and the screws that hold the neck to the body, tilt the neck, adjust the truss rod, re-tighten the neck to the body and re-tune.

To get an idea on playing the 24" scale, put a capo at your first fret and tune down 1/2 step.
That is a 24" scale.
So as far as fret spacing, everything moves up one fret compared to a Strat, but the tension is down 1/2 step like SRV or Hendrix.

Personally, I would choose Duo Sonic, because I could have a Maple fretboard without having to spend tons of money on an American Jazzmaster or Jaguar (seem to be the only ones that offer Maple). Mustang 90 doesn't offer Maple either (that I can find).
