So my mustang I bought recently is a 1970, or atleast that's what the serial number says. It's # is282266. But when I pulled the neck off for some repairs I noticed that the neck was stamped Oct 65. So this makes me curious if this guitar isn't how it originally came from assembly or if they just had a neck they had to use. Anyone have an answer?

1965 to 1970 would seem like a long time, but it's not uncommon for there to be legitimate parts mismatches in those years (and even into the 80s)
Concerning would be a 1965 serial number with a neck stamped 1970. In your case, it is entirely possible that the neck was misplaced in 1965 and was "found" and put back on the production line in 1970.

I'm not a Mustang expert by any means. But if Mustangs had serial numbers on the neckplate like most Fenders of that era, my assumption is that the neck isn't original to that guitar.

Mustangs had little to no collectors' interest before Nirvana. They were just cheap guitars, not investments. Nobody ever thought that someday people might care about originality. When old Les Pauls and Strats were booming in value, used Mustangs were still sub-$100 pawnshop guitars.

Original neck might have been damaged, or the frets worn out. Even into the '80s, a fret job was more expensive than pawn shop Mustangs.

Sad thing is the original neck and that '60s donor body could be buried in a landfill under 30 years of newer trash.
