I just acquired an old Mustang I’d like to restore. The serial suggests it is a ‘64, but the color is wrong. It is black with a red marbled pickguard. Serial L47597. It has white plastic, oval tuning keys and 22 frets.
Is there a way to determine the original color without tearing it apart? Jay

A real 1964 Mustang could have been repainted quite early - the three colors offered might not be everybody's favorites, and the target clientele probably didn't think of Mustangs as future vintage instruments.
(If the pickguard is the tortoise one, the original color could have been the White.)

So, before doing any restoration, I'd recommend a general evaluation of what's original, what (& when) has been modded. And that means a full autopsy - which in all likelihood will also reveal the color question.

Anyways & IMHO, a DIY restoration on a '64 Mustang should only be done if one has the expertise, skills & tools to do it properly. And @jcannondicks, I of course have no idea of your background, so I don't mean to doubt or disrespect your skilfulness on these.
