Hi,
I'm looking at a Fender Mustang Olympic White from 1966 and got a couple of questions hopefully somebody can have an answer to.

Most Mustangs I've seen are coming with the offset Contour Body decal on the head (small decal - next to the Fender logo).

Could a 1966 Mustang not have the Contour Body decal? I know from 1967 it was removed, but what about 1966's?

And a second question.
Are all the original 60's Mustang cases grey? The one I'm looking at it's coming in a black case.

Thanks everyone!

The missing decal, especially alone, is IMHO not a sure sign of a fake.
On the case, Mustang basses in around '66 could have a black or grey case. Mustang guitars - out of my knowledge, but again IMHO not impossible.

How's the guitar in general? Have you had a chance to check the details, electronics etc?

The guitar is fine, sounds really good, a few scratches here and there. I haven't had the chance to look at the components, no. Just play it and observe it.

Seems to be reliable from every angle (sound, serial number, features and look). The only thing that makes me hesitate is the missing contour body decal and the black case. Other than that it seems perfectly fine.

Opinions?

You're putting us on the forum on a mission impossible…
If you can't tell legit/fake having seen & tested the guitar, diagnosing via the web, especially with no pics, is even harder.

a. Check everything, including the electronics.
b. Have the guitar checked by a pro.
c. If those aren't possible or leave too many open questions, walk away and wait for the next one.

Thanks for you reply @jmattis

I'm trying to find out whether or not 1966 Mustangs could come with the missing decal.
I can't seem to find that info online.

As far as I know the decal was removed the following year, from 1967 onward for a few years. Hence asking for second opinions. As I said before my opinion after checking the sound and the components is that is a 1966 model and also what the owner says, although further clarification would be highly appreciated.

Here's a video I've found on youtube of what seems to be a 1966 without the decal:

It seems that for some reason some models weren't coming with it.
In terms of the electronics whats the best way to check the year by checking them?
