I am planning to 'hot rod' a 2018 Duo-Sonic. One of the main things I want to do is add a Stratocaster jackplate. I'm still at concept stage: can anyone tell me if the Duo's body is thick enough to do this? I don't mind if the cavity needs to go all the way through, with a small plate on the back to cover up the hole.

Here's my work-in-progress design. I'll probably end up giving her a heavy relic finish:

Amazing what one can do with the 'PrtSc' button and MS Paint. Photoshop, schmotoshop ...

An interesting facelift to the Competition Mustang style. Fender had some similar Limited model Strats & Teles a while ago.

On the jack question, the Duo-Sonic HS has a push-pull tone knob, which in all likelihood is as deep as some Strat jacks - Axetec has one only 14 mm (~.55") deep.

Of course, contacting Fender would give you the body depth/dimensions. Support pages >contact >phone or email, or the wonderful chat service there, if they still have it.

And: even though you didn't ask, I'll vote for non-reliced finish.

Thanks. I'll give the online chat a go.

Starting to think you're right. Although I was inspired by the Custom Shop's "El Diablo" Strat and a vintage FrankenStrat I saw on the internet, I'm starting to think that putting all the effort (and money) into building a cool shiny hotrod and then beating it up might be a bad idea.

All feedback welcome - including suggestions to soup it up some more. Might stick a "56" decal in there somewhere...

Bridge pickup will probably be the Seymour Duncan Hot Stack. I can't decide what I want in the neck position.

I can't imagine that the angled jackplate extends any further into the body than the tip of the plug on a standard Mustang.

You're probably right. But the jack does enter the body from a much deeper position relative to the surface and I'm not sure how the electrical socket part will come into play - it will be presented to the bottom of the cavity whereas now on the DS it has as much space as it needs (although the answer to that is probably just to spin it round so it needs as little room as possible, with the contact strip of metal moved away from the cavity bottom). Also, the size of the cavity matters - a small hole very close to the surface of the back of the guitar is probably not a risk factor, but a bigger hole is (i.e. presenting a bigger weak spot for a potential split/breakage). Hopefully Fender will reply to the message I sent yesterday.

Of course, one solution could be to flip the plate upside down and have it standing proud from the body. That might look cool.

Seems that Photobucket is experiencing problems as the site is not responding.
