pretty sure the pickup should either "work or not" (as audio circuit).

so thus imagine "the pickup is working" and the problem will be elsewhere (wont be the volume pot if your other positions are @ 10 either...)

maybe you have a problem with the switch selector circuitry ? OR i would test the resistance whilst wiggling the wire to make sure it is sound (something sounds a bit fishy).

there shouldn't be/have been "audio drop" as it is a passive audio circuit, if there was fault you would get intermittant signal < hence being fishy.

the only other thing i can think of is the "Special Design Hot Jazzmaster Pickups" and guessing that they are "amped single coils" (???) and the "amp bit" blew.

sorry for poor terminology, hope makes sense.

regards

They are just overwound single coils... no active circuitry.

The Classic Player Jazzmaster is unique in that it has separate volume and tone pots connected only to the neck pickup, but they are active only if the slide switch is in the "Rhythm" position. This completely disables the bridge pickup AND the 3-way toggle and master volume/tone.
If the slide switch is in the "Lead" position, then the "roller" volume and tone are deactivated, and the 3-way toggle and master volume/tone operate as they would on a Mustang or Tele.

This differs from the "Player" and "American Pro" which are just a 3-way and pair of pots.

sorry for my post in that case - i am now confused; does that just mean the OP was mistaken about the audio drop due to all of the various settings ?.

"strange guitar" (subjectively); is it built for recording or something ? thanks

"Strange" is a good way to put it, but ultimately, it's not so much for recording as it is for flexibility in live performance.
You can have the guitar locked into two different volume/tone combinations, and select between them (on the neck pickup) by using the top "Lead/Rhythm" slide switch.
The main toggle switch simply selects between the two pickups "normally", so you have four different tonal variations available at the touch of a finger.
The upper slide switch is a "master" override, so using it, you can go from bridge, neck, or bridge+neck on the lower volume/tone setting, directly to the neck on the upper volume/tone settings.

This brings with it wiring that is more complex, increasing the potential for problems due to a switch making poor contact, a cold solder joint, or a bad pot.

thankyou!.

interesting, - "strange" because i have never composed music / think about instruments "for the benefit of other people"... (what with them always shouting at me to stop playing).

(i like the neck pickup on 10 tone; misanthrope.)

sorry for intruding on the thread OP / being confused, it will be because of the switches probably guessing - moving parts / guitar upkeep etc.

Chances are the pickups being defective or dead.

It's also possible you've got a bad wiring issue.

In your place I would return the guitar back to the store and call a professional tech for a complete setup.
