Hey all. I have a jaguar pro which is a beast, but the Truss rod nut has been stripped. The neck is nice and straight currently, but with the changing weather, I will need to make some adjustments. I am planning on removing the walnut plug and removing the old nut with a gripper wrench as it does bite anti clockwise. My issue will be number one: as the headstock is lacquered how can I get the plug out neatly, and two: when putting back in a replacement plug, how can I get it to not look crappy. I have heard about using nail polish to fill in the gaps around the new plug? is that a thing? please give me ideas or past experiences if you have any. Thanks a lot.

For real? This is is the second problem you have with an almost brand new guitar
( https://forums.fender.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=108633 )...

If the guitar was alright in the beginning, you're doing something horribly wrong. Stop all, check what the consumer legislation and warranties may cover, and (even if all required work falls on your own wallet) take the guitar to a good pro.

The truss rod operation you're asking about is not a job for someone who doesn't know the whats and hows of the job. Besides, replacing the truss rod nut won't help if the problem is with the rod itself. Sometimes a new neck is the best way out.

And: Sorry if the above sounds harsh - I really don't mean to be rude in any way.

Thanks for the reply. It was purchased second hand pal. Was set up with 9s before so the neck was dead straight. I have put 12s on as With it being a shorter scale length I don’t like the slack with lighter strings which is why the neck needs adjusting. There is nothing wrong with the truss rod itself, it’s just the stripped nut. The issue I had with the bridge was due to their ebeing a fault with the bridge itself, a loose adjustment screw meant it would not return to zero are any movement. A new staytrem solves that issue. In terms of knowing how truss rods work I’m fine dude. Have been playing and teaching for over a decade so have worked on many guitars. It’s just I have not had to removed the walnut plug on a lacquered headstock and re-plug/finish. Just want to see if anyone has done it and had good results. Don’t worry man, didn’t come across harsh haha. Thanks for the reply though. If It comes to it and I find some answers then like you say, a pro will be the ticket. Cheers

So by "stripped" you mean the truss rod hex end has rounded?
In that case, I'd go all the way with different alternatives (from a pro level 1/8" hex key to DIY conical hex key to StewMac's gripper wrench to using a pro) before that nut replacement operation, plus still consider a pro to do the replacement.

But if you absolutely insist on DIY, the link below shows instructions. IMHO, to get it right (= good enough so one doesn't shiver every time one sees the instrument), it takes quite a bit of experience on woodworking/guitar maintenance etc.

yeah thats the one pal. The hex socket is stripped. I will ask around a bit more and see if I can find a good local tech to take it to even just to see if it is doable without making it look like death. I did think it may even be easier to sand the headstock back to wood as it is only the top of the headstock that is lacquered. that would make it a lot easier to get a consistent finish after inserting the new plug. I would then need to get new logo decals etc but would be neater than trying to match the existing finish. I do carpentry as a hobby but when it comes to finish, I just tend to stick with oils. Thanks mate. that link will be helpful to explain what I actually need doing easily.
