I am a beginning guitarist, but have money at the moment and want a new guitar...i have arrived at the conclusion that i want a jaguar, but am stuck as to which one. I am into anything from dylan, zappa, the doors, a little punk, i'm really big the red hot chili peppers so i want a nice clean tone, grunge, and some other odd bands, i am just wondering if the HH will be more suited to what i want to play or the more traditional single coil jaguars, what do you think?? Any input about overall quality of the two or anything you know about the guitars would be greatly appreciated, thank you

you can now buy the jaguar classic with humbuckers tht have coil tap, thus allowing the best of both worlds (Y)

Well, the Jaguar HH really sounds nothing like the regular model. To me, it's clean tone is fairly murky (definitely not suited for Chili Pepper stuff, I play alot of grungy stuff that requires a very clean tone with a chorus pedal... if you get it do NOT pair it with a chorus pedal, it sounds like underwater mush...), but with heavy distortion, the Dragster humbuckers can crank. It's a very powerful guitar, but I don't know if it's capable of playing cleaner stuff, which seems to be what you're leaning to with the Chili Peppers and Dylan.

Bought a 1966 Jaguar in 1980. The guy I bought it from had added a Jaguar pick-up to it in a center position. He had rewired the pick-up set up too. It sounds so unique, I left it like that. If I get a chance, I'll pull the pickguard & shot some pics & post it here. Mite be worth looking into doing that to the Jag you wanta buy.

What "era" of Red Hot Chili Peppeaers music are you playing? For the early stuff without John Frusciante, I'd go for some kind of strat (Not HSS, since I think you'd be wanting a twangy bridge position sound alot, which a humbucker can't produce).
Blood Sugar Sex Magik style music, Either jaguar, mustang, with a lot of compression. A tele for the funkier stuff might be suited as well.
Wont even go into the musical nightmare that is One Hot Minute.
Californication and By the Way, strat all the way.
HSS strat or HH jaguar for Stadium Arcadium, I'd say.

Strat or even jazzmaster for The Doors, i think.

And what kind of punk are you into, The Clash style or The Ramones style?

well, i listen to a lot of old red hot chili peppers, so i love slovak, navarro i didn't care for too much at all, but i am definitly into frusciante rhcp too. As for punk, like i said i don't listen to tons of it, i listen to stiff little fingers, ramones, modern lovers, stuff like that.

I think you should consider some sort of P90 for the ramones. But a Jaguar with a single coil and a humbucker or SSS strat, i think would be optimal. Time to get out the saw!
