What's the scoop on this guitar? I absolutely love the body style and the feel, and when the right one turns up I plan on having it (Red&Black/USA) but it seems like it's a red-headed stepchild as I never see them advertised for sale (except occasionally on e-bay, or the funky racing stripe models) in mags like Vintage guitar where there are thousands of other Fender models. Is the Toronado a crappy guitar or is it simply just a design nobody digs? Or is it that everyone who has one is never going to part with it?

Fill me in before I buy...gracias.

This is not exactly a "rare and unusual" item...kind of a strange variation of offset waist, but with a spare tire...they make one with a Starsky and Hutch type stripe, too, and another with a morphed SG type of look. Seems to be a Jagmaster update, sorta...

I'd find a store with one in stock and play it. If it's got the sound you like (and it's going to sound like a Jagmaster, I'll betcha!), and the looks and feel are to your taste, then fine.

But as an investment? I wouldn't go there. Nor will it hold any huge resale value.

Thanks j_j, I am not at allconsidering the Toronado as an investment guitar, I just like it as a player, and for it's looks. It's just curious to me why it doesn't turn up for sale used very much. Either there are not a lot out there, or folks who have 'em are gonna keep 'em I guess. I was wondering if anyone knew of real issues with the Toronado that would make it unwise to pick one up. Bad wiring, crooked necks etc etc...

I think you're being a bit of a Nervous Nelly, with all due respect.

If anything's gonna play right out of the box, it's a Fender, and if anything's gonna be easy to tweak and set up, answer is the same.

I own lots of Fenders, and tried on a Jagmaster a couple of years ago. It was perfect out of the box; perfect fit and finish, easy to play, felt great, etc. But it didn't have quite the sound I was looking for, so I flipped in on Ebay.

Note that for the price of these things, you really can't go wrong! So, dive in and let us all know how much you love it!

Hello All!

The Fender USA Toronado unfortunately was short lived. I have one and love it. It has the Black Dove pick ups in it which scream classic tone and vibe! Plus a larger headstock and contour heel which add to it's coolness.

This was offered with either the BD p/u's or Humbuckers. Only the first year I believe had the natural headstock. After that they used a black headstock.

Yeah it was because the director said it looked good in the video, but John was very reluctant because he only likes playing vintage guitars

If you find one with Black Doves buy it. Of all the Fenders I've had (and there's been a few) the Toronado is my go to guitar. Any sound you want, It's there. The neck is a little chunky but once accustomed to it I found it caused less fatigue the longer I played. Can't beat the style and the price is far less than the guitar is worth (on say... a comparative basis with anything Gibson puts out with P-90's). Never tried the Toranado with the other pups available on it but I've read the MIM's aren't near the quality that the American made with Black Dove P-90's. It's likely their scarce because anyone what gots one ain't letting her go.

Yo Noley! (or anyone else still looking for these)

Check out guitarsandeffects.com He's got a red & black one with Black Doves for about $800 with a wrap around adjustable tail. Looks cool. I've purchased a few guitars there from Nate (including my butterscotch Toronado). Stuff goes fast on his site but it's still available today.
take care and let me know what you think if you get it.

Thanks for the tip. I didn't know about that site.

It's a beautiful thang isn't it? Same color scheme as my Strat too...Imagine how hot it would look with a black bridge and tuners.

A definite maybe...

I love Toronados. I had a black one but had to sell in order to buy an acoustic for some recordings I was doing. They are great and I would buy a USA one if I ever saw one!
