I played a Mustang Pawn Shop at a local store a while back and fell love with the feel. I was broke at the time or I would have bought it on the spot.
I did a bit of research and found out that the original model is a MIJ 2011 followed by a MIM 2012. Do these dates sound correct? from the reviews I've read it was most likely the first MIJ model. You can tell the difference between the two by where the truss rod adjuster located; the MIJ mkdel has the adjuster on the bottom of the neck while the MIM has the adjuster by the headstock.
I'm just trying to find out if Fender just produced these two versions or if there are others out there.
Please help me ouy with this. Thanks.

also, is there an official site where u can enter in the serial # and find out the production year?
i found a couple unoffical sites; the serial # from the Mustang PS I've been eying came back as 2010. could a 2011 model have a serial # from the year prior (in this case) 2010? I was thinking they could of made it in late 2010 but it wasn't released 'til the following year (2011).

I thought all the Pawn Shop Mustangs were MIJ models - if I'm remembering the Pawn Shop series correctly there was one set of model made in Japan for the first year and a different set of models made in Mexico for the second year - but the Pawn Shop Mustangs were so popular they kept them around for a second year (and they were still MIJ). Either way MIM and MIJ would have different serial number formats.

2011 models were MIJ while the 2012 were definitely MIM. From what I've read, the MIJ models are much better quality, and rival American made Fenders. This makes me really curious about the model I played and instantly fell in love with at the guitar shop; it was definitely post 2012 when I played it.

On the serials vs. manufacturing date: Fender serial numbers can overlap - sometimes months, sometimes several years...

You could email consumerrelations@fender.com with the serial, they can usually provide some more accurate info than any unofficial serial number search engines (they have lots of mistakes & missing info, especially on non-US serials) or the Fender support pages (This page down, "Support" > PRODUCT DATING > choose the appropriate country of origin).

On the MIJ/MIM, IMHO, don't judge any guitar by the birth place.
The Pawn Shop Mustang Special in 2012 Frontline has model number 026(etc); so it's a MIJ. The Pawn Shop Mustang Special in 2013 Frontline has model number 014(etc.) which makes it a MIM. I've no idea of the specific transfer date.

I've seen many 2012 models for sale online and they usually say Made in Mexico. Maybe the sellers have the year wrong?

I tried emailing Fender, twice.. no response!

"The sellers" probably rely on their serial number & possible other markings - if everything else checks and unless proven otherwise, there is no need to suspect those.

On the other hand, Fender's marketing material is absolutely no gospel. Note that the whole Pawn Shop series is missing from the 2011 Frontline although they were available in music stores & shops...
Maybe Fender US was too busy with all the 60th Anni hustle to notice these first Pawn Shop models or maybe they came out after the brochure was printed - or whatever.

But like I wrote before, the country of origin isn't a decisive factor on an individual instrument's quality. Just don't get hooked on a M or a J. Both Mustangs will play just fine after a good setup & neither of them will become a collective at least in the sense you could sell it and retire.

On the Fender's no response: I've always gotten an answer to a question within a few days. And lately they've been using the automatic yes, we got your message confirmation. Just try again.

I believe the Pawn Shops came out mid-year in 2011 so they weren't in the 2011 Frontline (which would have come out in January/February) but they were in a separate brochure. The Pawn Shop brochures do not have the Fender model number listed, which tells you where a model was made.

In the 2012 Frontline/"Illustrated Price List" they show the Pawn Shop Mustang as being MIJ (the model number begins with 026). In the 2013 Illustrated Price List they show the model number as MIM - beginning with 014.

I guess I had only seen the 2011 and 2012 Pawn Shop brochures; they show the MIJ model. Since these were mid-year models I suspect that it was MIJ from say July 2011 to July 2012, then MIM from July 2013 until they were discontinued.
