Now that these guitars have been out a while people have drawn a few of their own conclusions. I have been very satisfied with my Stratocaster and Telecaster, but having an opportunity to play a Duo Sonic HS directly into an AC15 at my local store, I was blown away. It didn't sound like a Strat or Tele. It has its own unique tone and versatility. These are subjective terms but The neck pickup sounds a little jazzier to me. The bridge humbucker a little thinner than my 498T pickup in my other guitar. But really cuts through a mix when full on. The split coil bridge is not quite like a Strat or Tele but very nice and usable. I love, love, love the split coil bridge and neck in the middle position. I have been writing songs like crazy. This thing inspires. So versatile- I can get a bunch of tones out of this thing. Rock, surf, country, ambient, grunge, jazz- it's all in there. The color is labeled surf pearl on the website. I think this is a new color (correct me if I'm wrong) that is a sparkly light green that is complemented nicely by the mint pickguard and really pretty grain on the rosewood and maple headstock. Very classy. Frets felt great on this model but I had to pass on a couple of the maple neck one's that I tried out. Not sure what was up?

A few things that I've had to work on are stretching the springs on the saddles (a little loose and buzzy) and the nut was cut too deep on the G and high E strings. Sounded a little like a sitar in the store but I've tamed it a bit once I got it home.

Overall, this is a great guitar for the money. The shorter scale feels nice for working on difficult chord reaches and would be a serious upgrade for smaller hands. I might also be interested in a Mustang with MP-90's they sound good in Fender's videos, but nobody has em in stock near me.

I'll drop some pictures on my website:

You asked for correction, so... The Surf Pearl is rare, but it isn't a newcomer. It's been a standard option at least in 2002-2003, and of course in Custom Shop models.

On the latter part of the quote; I've never (yet) seen a Fender come out of the factory with too low nut slots. Press the string on third fret, see if a piece of your everyday copy paper will slide between the first fret and the string - if it does, the slot is not too low. (There are plenty of zero fret guitars with all frets level...)
That and the 'loose and buzzy' may hint that the setup isn't yet perfect. Shorter scale = looser strings, which may need some trickery - like shimming.

BTW: At least I prefer pics on the forum to following an outside commercial link...

Why won't Fender make these in left hand? Missing out on a massive chunk of sales. I just don't get it.

One of my friends is a lefty, and he feels your pain...but he also says that Fender is a LOT more lefty-friendly than Gibson

But to play devil's advocate, think for a minute about "massive chunk of sales"...lefties are between 5-10% of the population. Some of those lefties will choose to play right-handed, so let's guess that 7% of the population of potential guitarists are left-handed. Is 7% enough of a market to go after for anything other than the MiM Strat/Tele, the American Professional (formerly American Standard) Strat/Tele, and the American Elite (formerly AmDlx) Strat/Tele? (There's also the Mod Shop line, the Kurt Cobain Jaguar, and a couple of the vintage Strat/Tele lines, and I suspect you can get whatever you want from the Custom Shop if you have the moolah.) Even in this day of NC machining, there are still setup costs and learning curve costs to switch the line from righties to lefties, unless you are projecting enough sales to have a dedicated line. Then you have to reach the buyers; my friend is often frustrated to go into the local GC and find maybe three lefty guitars available to play, one of which is often an acoustic - not a good situation when he's in the market for an amp! It just may not pay off for the retailer to stock a wide selection of lefties.

Like I said, I sympathize, but I can also see it from the manufacturer's perspective. A non-guitar example: I buy manual transmission cars, but they are increasingly hard to find, and my choice of models is severely limited...

Is anyone aware if the 24" scale necks on these new Duo Sonics are like the Classic Vibe Duo Sonics that had a 24" conversion neck? From what I've read, I could take a the neck from a Classic Vibe Duo and slap it on a strat and it'd yeild a 24" scale strat w/o requiring bridge relocation. I'm not looking to make a short scale strat, but I do have a Jazzmaster that I think I want to try converting into a shorter scale.

I don't get what you mean by the CV having a "conversion neck" - I've always thought it as just a regular 24-incher.
Anyways, the Squier CV Duo-Sonic™ has 21 frets and the Fender has 22, so those necks aren't comparable in the way you're thinking.

In any case, be prepared for minor (read: major...) adjustments. That applies even if you use an especially designed conversion neck from e.g. Warmoth. Drop-in replacements seldom exist.

Does no one else wish Duo Sonics were still 22.75" scale? Folks gripe the new Mustangs without the vibrato and the switches are like Duo Sonics but I feel it's the other way around with the 24" neck.

I found a reasonably priced 1993 reissue, but it sounds pretty awful and has some snap, crackle, and pop issues. I'm thinking about the Seymour Duncan Duo Sonic pickups. Anyone have any insight on these? I mean, the name means something, no?

Can't comment on the SD pickups, but the snapcraclepop is most likely not caused by current the pickups. The cause is somewhere in the wiring; dirty pots/bad connections/worn switch etc. Just correcting that doesn't need new pups. Get those later - if you're not satisfied with the original sound.

You're right I'm sure. I've pretty much came to the same conclusion. I'll have the the wiring and electronics seen too and then see what it sounds like. I think I'll have the saddles replaced as well as they are nasty and I'd like to have individually adjustable strings anyway.

Only 10 percent of the population is lefty. How many play guitar? I doubt they loose that much in sales. BTW I'm a sinister lefty myself. learned to play right handed. Oddly came natural to me.
