have a Squier Venus vista. These guitars were made back in 96/97 and then were discontinued. It's MIJ and feels and plays much better than the regular Squiers.

My problem is, I can't seem to find a lot of info on the pickups. Here are the specs I found:

Body: Solid basswood.
Neck: Maple; 25.5" scale.
Fretboard: Bound rosewood w/22 frets.
Electronics: HB pickup (bridge), single coil pickup w/staggered Alnico pole pieces (neck), 3-pos toggle, master volume.
Pickguard: White shell.
Hardware: 6 saddle adjustable bridge with strings through body design, traditional machine heads, all nickel w/chrome plating.

I read somewhere that the pickups are "Std-1 single coil (neck) & Screamin 2 hb pickup (bridge)"

So any info on these pickups would be appreciated

Here it is:

Just about the only thing I know of these guitars is that they exist. But to get the topic rolling:

These pages must already be familiar to you: Tachyonlabs Venus Parts List and T-Labs Venus
If that parts list is all that Fender themselves could provide, you are probably running to a dead end. Unless you get an answer from Courtney or someone involved in planning/designing this model...

The six stringer is not advertized to have Duncan pups like the 12 stringer - so unless you find a logo somewhere, there's no way to tell who made the pups.
You could get some info if you measure the pickup DCR with a multimeter, but the sound qualities of the pickups tell you more. I read somewhere that the humbucker resembles SD's Little '59..?

Thanks for the info. That's exactly where I got the specs info from. But unfortunately it doesn't really help.

I'm considering changing the bucker. The guitar sounds really nice, very poppy and trebly... Kinda like 60s surfer music. But I wanted something a bit more "dirty" and less trebly.... I want to use it to play grunge and 90s rock. Run it through a Fuzz pedal. So I'm going to see which bucker can do the job. Again, thanks!

Or a better amp!

I'm using a Brownsville Thug. The clean channel is pretty good but nothing to call home about.

But you are indeed right about the Big Muff! I own a Line 6 M-5 which has an effect similar to the Big Muff. It's wickedly dirty but I still want a bit more warmth (well, less trebly).

Last question: I know the single pup is alnico, but what about the bucker? I think (and this is purely based on a color comparison between the two pups) it also has alnico poles. What say you? And is it true that alnico pole pups are, to paraphrase what I often read, "better" and mostly found on higher end guitars (not on average squiers)?

I have nothing to back this up, but my gut feeling is that the AlNiCo single coil would be paired with a similar humbucker.

Different type pickups for different needs. AlNiCo, CuNiFe, Neodymium, Ceramic, active, passive etc; everybody has a preference but nobody can say what's the absolutely best.

And I was more than half serious with that Big Muff, in pedal form...
On the overtrebly issue: tone knobs, EQ pedals and cap values are the usual fixes.

Jmattis, once again you provide the info. Thanks, I appreciate it a lot!

So I finally got a chance to take a close-up pic of the pups. They will probably not add much to identifying these pups, but hey, images are always a plus. When I get the chance, I'll take a look under the pickguard,
Hopefully there's a barcode or serial # somewhere!

Ps: went to the only music store on the island and unfortunately they didn't have the Big Muff pedal. They did have other interesting pedals though, like the Boss DS-2. I guess I'll try ebay or reverb now.

PPs: sat down with the Venus, the Line 6 M-5 pedal and the amp and tweaked for a while, and then compared the sound to my Fender Strat. Hands down the bucker produces a much dirtier sound, without being too bassy or dull... Love it! Now to buy that Big Muff!

Jmattis, I'm curious as to your opinion on the following: what do you make of the somewhat odd staggering of the single pup's poles? Is this "normal"? It appears that the bass E pole seems to be somewhat higher than usual. Could the previous owner have pushed it up? See the images on my previous post above.

Remember: I know very little of these models  So, your guess is as good as mine - google pic search shows that there are different staggers on Venuses, who knows why.

I wouldn't worry about the stagger per se too much (same goes to pickup magnet types and other that kind of things). After all, it's the overall sound that matters.

Thanks. You are right about the sound. As I previously stated, it sounds so un-Squier like (I used to own a regular Indonesian made Squier). So much brighter and more like a Fender.

Thanks for all your help. Now to get this guitar cleaned up and shining again...

Don't modify that thing at all. Even pickups. Thats going to be one of the all time collectible Fenders. They're already going up in value like crazy.
