Hi guys, currently I have 3 Mustangs and a Kurt Cobain Jaguar that I just bought. I actually had one of these before and sold it to fund another guitar. I missed it so I recently decided to order another one. This new one is pretty light. It's lighter than my last one for sure but the thing that kind of got me was that it has a knot in the rosewood fretboard. It looks stable like it wont pop out or anything but I would rather
it not(KNOT) be there of course. So would this bother you guys at all? 4 Pics below...

Ahhh yeah...ok. But seriously is this acceptable?
Anyways I treated the fretboard with lemon oil and it made the knot fairly unnoticeable because it darkened the fretboard up. It looks like its stable and wont fall out at this point. Maybe if the fretboard dried out it might, but then I would have bigger issues like a warped neck...lol.

If I get a chance I will post more pics with the lemon oil applied. I'm just slightly disappointed in Fender QC letting this go as acceptable on a guitar that costs around $1100 USD.
According to rosewood grading... "Grade C : This material will be made of plantation rosewood. The material will contain mineral streaks, small knots, wild grains, flat grains. This is a material which will contain some defects of wood." So they are using a C grade Rosewood...Hmmmm
Many of the Kurt Cobain Jaguars I have seen have mineralized and streaked rosewood fretboards of a lower grade rosewood. I've never seen an Epiphone with a fretboard knot... :?:

1- Wrong , read my fist answer to your question "Would this bother you ? "

2- Your second question is " Is this acceptable ?"
Read my first answer.

3- Sorry that you don't understand it is a matter of taste. More I read your post more I think you don't like it , so return guitar to the store.

I think it looks cool!

Like, the all-seeing eye. Your guitar is watching!

On the other hand, is it a quality issue or a cosmetic issue?
I mean, is that part of the fingerboard not likely to hold up to the test of time?
If so, I would replace it. If it's just cosmetic? Awesome!

Actually and seriously, this is the case.
Personally, I wouldn't visually mind a knot of that size. If it causes a noticeable bump/dent/warp in the fretboard, that's a whole different story.
And in any case, I might also bargain with the price a bit, just for fun.

But, you don't seem confortable with the knot, and that probably won't change no matter what kind of answers you get here. So, time to contact the seller; the forum can't help you further.

+1

Return the instrument for exchange or a refund.

Thanks to jmattis for a decent answer. It is a small knot and after the lemon oil treatment it's even more unnoticable. I'm mainly worried about it coming out as the guitar ages but I suppose keeping the fretboard lightly moisturized with lemon oil would prevent this.

So I ended up going back to the retailer to see if they had any more for an exchange..one was on the floor and it was dinged up pretty bad from people trying it in the store. The fretboard had no knots but had this really weird light color and swirly grain. And the body had a huge ugly knot...I can't win! lol.

So the salesman comes out with another new one in a box...GREAT! We take it out and the neck has a massive bow in it and it had pretty serious fret sprout(frets either not dressed well or the neck shrunk from being too dry and the frets feeling sharp and protruding from the sides.) Ok I could deal with that I guess...loosen the strings, maybe switch from 10 guage to 9 guage string may do the trick before trying a truss rod adjustment. Get it into a proper humidified environment. Put a little sponge in the case to help hydrate the guitar. Fine.

Well this one had the adjustamatic bridge thumb adjustment wheel overlapping the hole in the pickguard! There was no way to lower the action. The thumbwheel was actually slightly overlapping a pickguard screw as well so cutting the pickguard wouldn't have helped. Needless to say my tiny knot in my fretboard started to seem no so bad after all.

In the end I just kept my original guitar with the knot. It seems the QC at the Mexican factory or at least on these guitars is kind of so so. If you pick one up look it over really good. There are some cosmetic and some not cosmetic flaws and I guess finding a keeper is a bit hit and miss.

Do you get the feeling the Masters of the Guitar Universe are trying to tell you something..?

A note to FMIC quality control: try harder.
Even in pics #3 & #4 on the product page Cobain Jaguar the highE string has popped beside the saddle...

Yeah I don't understand. Could be I am very unlucky I guess. I have seen some nice Fenders to come out of Mexico. Maybe demand is really high on these and they are rushing to get them out especially since the Japanese Cobain Mustangs haven't been available for awhile now. Seems those are sold out everywhere.
Speaking of the Japanese Mustangs...I have 4 and the quality on those is superb. I have seen probably 10 and everyone looked like it came down from heaven they were so perfect. And I had the Japanese Charvels a few years ago and the USA Charvels weren't as good IMO.
Well I guess the guitar gods want me to keep this particular KC Jag so that's what I'm doing... :)
