Hi! Yesterday I was helping my grandfather clean out his house. He told me he had an old guitar and wanted to throw it away. When I opened the case , I saw this beauty. Now... it's in rough shape and my knowledge about it is null. I have some questions...

What is it worth in this shape?
Is it better to restore it a little bit before selling it?

If your grandpa still wants to throw the guitar away, I believe many forum members would like to be where that beauty lands...

The price level of vintage Mustangs is all over the place - for a guitar in full playing condition, the sellers are asking for prices like 2200$, 2500$, 3200 etc. The ones sold usually go for 1000-2000$, but sometimes even under that. And: a lot depends on the general price level of the area.
Of course, there's also the Mustang owned by Jimi Hendrix (same model, year and color as this one), which sold for about half a million bucks...

About the "restoring a little bit" part: you probably get opposite opinions, too, but IMHO any little bit is either too much or not enough. Plus, I'd suggest any work you choose to have done on the guitar should be done by a pro who knows his/her/its business.
Costs of (different level) repairs vs increase in price, I won't even start guessing.

Thanks for the quick response. About restoring it, I don't want to change the paint or anyhting. I want it to get it checked and get it working.
I hope it finds a good home!

That's a good way to go, IMHO. Take it to a good pro for assembly and possible electrical work, plus the usual setup.
Might be a good idea to remind him/her/it to keep all original parts in case something needs to be replaced. The same of course applies to keeping everything in the case with the guitar.
And, keep bugging your grandpa about the history of the guitar. Like, that Casa Margarida sticker seems to be from Puerto Rico, does he know the story behind it...

I am from Puerto Rico. The story behind it: He used to work as a hotel porter/janitor at the 'Caribe Hilton Hotel' in San Juan, Puerto Rico. One morning he had to clean up after a party and he found the case. He left it in the lost and found in the hotel, after 1 month they gave the guitar to him. I found some initials or letters in the neck pocket...

You ain't lyin' there!

That Dakota Red example is a real beauty and save for re-assembling the bridge, re-stringing and setting it up, I would do NOTHING ELSE. If necessary, find a trustworthy-and-competent luthier to handle the job. As for the guitar's value, jmattis has admirably covered that aspect. Use that data as a guideline should you decide to sell it.

If you were capable of removing the neck, checking the markings on the neck and pocket and posting pictures, then dropping the bridge into the bridge plate and putting some strings on it is a cake walk. Do that and you will know if the electrics are ok and the neck is straight. Then if your going to sell it, let the buyer do the setup. As for price, look at Reverb and eBay for a couple of weeks to get a idea of what to ask.
