Hello all.

I have had this guitar in storage for the last 25 years or so. I am not really sure when i acquired it but i think it was around 1987. I am looking at getting it back into working order, It needs a pickup installed and the wiring looked at as it looks like a bit of a hack job on the soldering.

I am hoping to get a date or at least a rough estimate of the year of mfg and also what pickup would be a good choice for this unit. I have just recently began to play acoustic and would love to get this one going so i can start playing/learning on it also. Since i picked up this it has not been strung or played.

It looks like the neck code is 4000-4652 with 47208 right below it. on the backside of the neck but it is stamped Armenia with a small number 2 next to it.

Also it looks like the previous owner may have tried to fit the neck to another body as there are 4 smaller screw holes in it. Also i am not sure if the body and neck are a matching pair or not.

I could not figure out how to attach pics so i hope the photo bucket link below works.

Thanks for any information anyone could give me.

Thanks again, Kurt.

The bridge pickup from Fender's Fat 50s set would be a worthy option. For a heavier vibe, you might try Seymore Duncan's Lil 59er or a DiMarzio Virtual Vintage Heavy Blues or Heavy Blues II.

I'll start with pic posting info: How to post pics - Nutter's quick start guide
For example: Image

The neck code and dating: "40" (apparently it should be "49") for Music Master, "00" for rosewood fretboard, "46" = week, "5" = year 1975, "2" = Tuesday.
The serial number on the neck plate (early 700000's for 1976) would comply with that.

The other stamp is actually "ARMENTA", and you got a hole which hits right where there should be an "X." for his first name, Xavier.

Didn't quite get the four smaller holes part, doesn't show well in the pics.

On electronics, I'd recommend going for originality; "as it was in the seventies". You can buy original pickups (the bass pup is the same as the gtr pup) on ebay & such, the simple wiring & other electronics aren't too hard to fix.

Edit: Just read Arjay's post. IMHO, if you choose a new pickup, it should be bright bright bright

Correct. Due to the mounting position of the Music Master's single pickup, a brighter pickup is definitely recommended.

As an adjunct, you may find that your body is routed for two pickups, ie: a Duo-Sonic configuration. If that be the case, it would open up the possibility of adding a second pickup. Unless you're joined at the hip with the idea of a 100% accurate restoration, a two-pickup guitar would allow you some sonic options not available with a stock instrument.

Thanks for the info, Thats excactly what i was looking for on the dating. The body is not routed for a second pickup so i will look for a 70's era single coil on ebay and see what i can find.

A few more questions, Where can i find a detailed schematic for the electronics? I did some googling and found a few but not much detail on them.

Also do the metal barrel knobs look correct for the year? or should they be the plastic ones.

Thanks again for any info.

Kurt.

I've only seen that era MM's with the black plastic knobs, so IMHO those metal ones are modded. Guessing those may have come from some seventies/eighties hifi stereo

On the wiring, you can use the MM bass wiring diagram:

Here's one about similar for guitar, but in a slightly different form from Seymour Duncan:

The original pots were AFAIK both 250K audio taper. And any .047uF cap should do it, although you can find reissue Astron styled .05 caps in case you want to go for really vintage style.
