I've recently stumbled upon the opportunity to purchase/trade some of my stuff for a 1966 Fender Mustang.

This Mustang is in a state of disrepair- there's some serious wiring issues, (the pickups only work about half the time- they stop working for a while when you switch from one to the other) the nut is loose, the high e string slips out of the bridge whenever you bend it, etc.

A big issue is that this guitar no longer has the original Fender paint job. Somebody in the late 60's sanded off the original paint from Fender and replaced it with a metallic dark green.

Does anybody out there have an idea of what this guitar is worth?

Thank you

Likely no more than six or seven hundred bucks.

Might not be of much help, but I got an estimate of "around $450 - $500" on my 72 Racing Stripe Mustang. It's in fair shape (a lot of checking on the paint, some dings, etc.) with all electronics working. The neck had to be shimmed and it won't stay in tune with any kind of rough playing or more than say 4 - 5 songs with a light touch. In short -- it's old like me. I bought it in 77 and from what I know, all parts are original. Yours has issues, but on the other hand is much older so I'll give an "I agree" to the other poster's estimate.

I have to wonder though if the one you're looking at was mine. I bought a 66 in 1968 (from a relative) and about a year later stripped it down. Never could get a pro paint job on it by hand but the same relative said he'd have the body painted in the cabinet shop where he worked. No charge if I could be patient -- might be a couple months before someone in the shop owed him a favor. But it would be a flat "metallic" color such as they painted the cabinets of computers and copiers with. Okay fine ... unfortunately I wasn't aware that he and my aunt had just about parted ways. They got divorced and that's the last I ever saw of the guitar. However, he only had the body and (left original, untouched) neck, so assuming it survived, he'd have had to replace the electronics and hardware.

I don't think it's even worth that much, too many problems with it and the paint job puts it out of collectors territory. I would say you'd be luck to get $500 and probably more likely $400. I wouldn't buy it period. Sounds like more work than it's worth. IMO
