Hi All,

I've just picked up a 2013 American Standard Tele (US13... serial) with maple fingerboard in Bordeaux Metallic supposedly with an ash body but my understanding is that tele's after 2013 had a contour body with "belly cut" mine doesn't is this unusual or was in an option not to have it?

TIA

While it looks legit, given that you link to an eBay picture, do you have any provenance that this is a real Fender American Standard Telecaster, and not, say, a partscaster? There are people who make a living on buying broken guitars and assembling whole guitars from them, passing them off as one of the models they have parts from.

Have you called Fender with the serial number and received a description of the guitar the serial number maps to?

No I've not contacted Fender, I have subsequently found on some other forums people saying that they got '12 or '13 models without the "belly cut" but no one seemed to know why.

I'll contact Fender see what they say.

Fender added the belly cut and the CS pickups in March of 2012 - which was also about the time they used up the "US11xxxxxx" serial number decals and moved on to the "US12xxxxxx" decals. There are some transitional models that year - non-update models with US12 serial numbers, and update models with US11 serial numbers.

However, this is a 2013 model, so it should have the cut. Interesting that some evidently went out without it.

I sent Fender an email but they haven't got back to me yet but I've found out some more info, as far as I can tell all the hardware is genuine American and consistent with a 2013 model I took the neck off and the butt of the neck is stamped 05SEP13 but the date stamped on the body in the neck pocket is Aug 2008 or 2009 hard to read.

I spoke to the guy I bought it off and he says his son bought it new from a shop in Los Angeles specifically because it didn't have the contour body, so is it possible Fender were supplying some Tele's with older bodies or possibly the shop was modifying them?

Either way it all seems genuine American and it looks and plays great.

I don't believe that would be the case. Fender doesn't stockpile bodies and/or necks for years any more - I don't think they're running a "Just In Time" system, but they use them up within a month or two of production.

I think the seller has been caught - they either swapped necks at some point (put a 2013 neck on a 2008/2009 body and vice-versa) or they got the parts individually and put it together themselves.

How about the pickups? A 2013 should have the CS pickups, while a 2008-2009 would have the plastic bobbin pickups.

In other words, it's a partscaster. The value is a lot less than if it was all 2008/2009 or all 2013.

Pickups definitely CS, also I got it at a very good price, talked him down to the price of a good partscaster anyway.

My US14 American Deluxe certainly has the cutaway. Interestingly enough, I got used to it, and now my 2015 LE Redwood Hotrod one does not have it. It is a vintage series guitar though, so it makes sense.
