I recently acquired a 2009 AVRI Tele.....I would have preferred one made after the AV series underwent a make-over a few years ago (2012 I believe) but this '09 model showed up a local guitar shop in pretty much "like new" condition and I was able to make an even trade for the Tele with a Nash Strat. So I got it without having to shell out any cash for it.

I've never had the chance to play one of the newer models (I never see them in the stores, not even in Guitar Center whenever I happen into one), so I was wondering how the old ones compare to the newer models? I'm assuming that the necks on the newer ones are probably thicker?

I assume that you checked the serial number on the bridge with Fender to confirm the build date.
Personally, I like color of the pre-2012 American Vintage '52 Telecaster better than the lighter blond color on the newer ones, and would not swap it for a newer model.
Some folks with poor taste or color blindness, dis the older color as being "orange".

I can't really address your question.
Supposedly, the necks are thicker.
I played one briefly quite a while ago and didn't notice any major difference in neck size or playability, except for the fact that the post-2012 Teles have modern wiring.
Below is my 2009 Fender American Vintage '52 Telecaster with a 2 piece ash body.
I swapped the vintage wired components out for modern wired components, keeping the original wired components unchanged, should I ever want to restore the guitar to being factory "original," which I think is highly unlikely.

Thanks for the reply. The reason I said it is an '09 is because that's the date I saw on the heal of the neck when I removed it. It could actually be a 2010 I suppose with a neck that was made in 2009, but either way, it's certainly a pre-2012 model.

It had the vintage style wiring (which I changed) and had almost no play wear that I could tell so whoever had it must have not used it much. As far as the finish is concerned, I could only describe it as very butterscotch but certainly nothing remotely close to "orange".

I'd just wish there were lower price point models that have thicker necks like the AVRI's without the 7.25" radius.

The James Burton Standard tele has a "vintage-style “U” neck profile" with a 9.5” radius.

The Classic Player Baja Telecaster has a soft V with a 9.5" radius.

There might be some others. These both cost significantly less than an American Standard.
