After some 40 yrs I've found the tele that I like. I had a tele deluxe back in the 70s that I liked a lot and eventually sold for who knows what reason and just played gibsons. Not so long ago I decided to give teles another go and couldn't find one I like to play. They just never felt right. I've gone through several former 52 ri and many others. So I found one on Craigslist that interested me. It's just a Mexican but with some nice mods. It's Wine Red with a pearl pick guard, nocaster p/u,s a 4 way switch and brass nut. The neck felt good so I had it set up with 11,s and took it last night to a gig and I ended up playing it almost the whole night. Wow did it sound good and perform fantastic. I've never been a big fan of the Mexican fenders but this has a good chance at becoming my No. 1 go to guitar.

As a user of Gibson type/style guitars (humbuckers and filtertrons), I have a love/hate relationship of the tele. It just doesn't feel right to me (perhaps that's the scale difference???) and as a result, I play it poorly. I love the sound, especially when someone else plays it. I even took it to a jam session and had a friend (who plays only strats and teles) play it thru my amp with no changes to any of my settings. Loved the sound. So I guess it's me that's the 'problem'. Some old dogs (me) can't learn new tricks or maybe don't try hard enough. Who knows?

Surely they are very different from what I'm used to.

I can relate to what your sayin. I felt the same way until I found this one. I'm sure if I pick up a different one I will hate it but this one I really like.

Maybe I should try 11's to see if it helps. I did change to 10's from the stock 9's and it only helped a little.

I have found that I can't jump easily from a Tele to either my SG or a Strat either. If I were in a band, I'd try to arrange all Tele sets to accommodate that. Since I just jam sometimes now, instead I try to bring the one style guitar I think will work overall.

I have the same problem with my Les Paul. Maybe its the scale or the shape of the neck but it just doesn't seem right to me.

I have played Teles on and off since 1967 and it's one of my favorite guitars. I always seem to go back to it. For my type of music it sounds great. The one I play now is a American Deluxe with noiseless pickups. I just recently acquired a Gibson 335 which I am finding out it is also a great guitar. It's still too early to tell which one is my favorite guitar. They are two entirely different guitars. Everyone should own at least on Tele.

Scale length differences can always be an issue if you're not used to jumping between different scale lengths.

But jumping between a strat and a tele is seldom a problem - you can get them with the same neck profile, width and frets; they have the same scale length; they have similar reach on both the high and low e side, and usually fairly similar weight. Sure, they look and sound different, and the tele doesn't have a vibrato bar, but they play pretty much the same.

Jumping to/from an LP or SG can be tougher. Different necks, different weights, different strap mount, different scale lengths, different reach. Even more so if you have a 24-fret LP or SG, and actually use the top frets (in which case you probably have an SG).

Congrats Tim! Ahem....pictures?

I have a '85 '54 Reissue Japanese Esquire and over the years I have played the crap out of it. I think the difference you encountering isn't so much the scale per say but string spacing. I have noticed when going back and forth between a Strat and my Les Paul Special, I stumble a bit until I warm up on the guitar for a while.

Hard to beat a Tele. You can rock or twang and pretty much everything in between. Those pups with the 4 way oughta give some off the beaten path tonal possibilities. Any variation of red or wine with pearl is a winner for me.

Always been a Yay or Nay issue with a Tele. I just have always preferred a Stratocaster. To be fair there have been a couple I liked but not fully. Mostly the body shape and it's squared contours.

The only solution was to build my own, a sort of hybrid body shape between a Stratocaster and a Telecaster and a pup configuration based on James Burton's use of Texas Specials.
The next one will be a bit more traditional but I will definitely incorporate a forearm contour, a neck heel relief and maybe the carved out back contour.
Bridge will always be a thru body string, fully adjustable brass bridge, locking tuners, rosewood neck.
As far as pups the Tele Texas Specials warrant a test run.
Controls reversed ( Vol / Tone / switch ) and last but not least, the upgraded jack system.

Look into a 4 way switch, it really makes it a very versatile guitar

I had this done to mine and do like the added tone versatility.
