I've just modded my US tele so there's a Gibson 490R at the neck. As per instructions that came with the pickup I soldered green and white together, red to the p-up selector switch, and black and shield to ground. The neck and bridge positions sound fine but the middle is kind of thin-sounding and very out-of-phase too, like a funk guitar with all the bass taken out. What's going on? How can I fix the problem? Should I reverse the polarity of the bridge pickup to put them back in phase?

If the pickups sound out-of-phase, the diagnose is they are out-of-phase
So, the easiest fix is to reverse the bridge pup leads.

Edit: or do as the Gibson instructions say:
Quote:
Note:
If pickup is out of phase with existing pickup, reverse black and red leads

Ok thanks, I'll try that (or maybe even install a 4-way switch with either option - series and out-of-phase).

The 4-way might be a good option so you can have both settings.

Actually current Tele wiring is for the middle setting to be both pickups in parallel (that out-of-phase/funk guitar type sound), so you did follow the directions correctly - that is what the middle position is supposed to sound like.

Try using a super 4-megapole 5-way selector to cut the front coil from the humbucker for that traditional single-coil Tele neck pickup twanginess and spank. You can also get series and out-of-phase tones in positions #2 and #4 from the super 5-way switch.
