Just got a new Modern Player Tele, and the tuners have way too much play in them for my liking. Would like to replace them with a better set, locking preferably but my main concern is that they are a direct drop in replacement with no drilling or filling required. I like the look of the vintage style that are on it now, but don't mind a more modern looking tuner as long as it fits the existing holes. Any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks!

Reading between the lines I'm going to assume that you have tuning stability issues.
If I'm correct then you need to get the nut sorted out, as swapping out the tuning machines will not cure anything if the nut is the source of the problem.

Nut issues aside, the tuning pegs have almost a 1/4 turn of "play" before the post moves the pitch of the string at all. It's not so much an issue of stability as it is confidence... I am used to much tighter play in tuning pegs, so the amount of give in these is unsettling. It may be a common and acceptable feature of the vintage style tuners, but I don't like it.

I have not yet had it set up with my preferred 10-52 gauge strings, so when that is done any issues with the nut will be addressed... But I want to put some non-sloppy tuners on it before I bother with a setup because it is an upgrade I know I want to do regardless. I'm just looking for recommendations on specific brands or part numbers of tuners that will not only perform better, but will fit the existing holes properly and without any modification or exposed old holes. A locking tuner would be nice for string change ease, but it's not a trem equipped guitar so I wouldn't say locking tuners are a necessity, just a convenience when string change time comes.

Gotoh do a range of vintage style tuners (including locking ones) that should just drop straight in.

Stewmac has the Gotoh vintage style lockers for just over 60 bucks, I may give those a shot. Reviews sound promising, main complaint is that they are stiff, which is exactly what I want, lol... So it should work out great. Thanks!

If the tuning is stable, the issue is much more to do with your confidence than the tuning machines.

Go out on a limb and learn to live with it would be my suggestion.

cheers

The issue is that out of 7 electric guitars, an acoustic guitar and three basses I currently own, along with about 50 others I've owned and sold over the years, this Tele is the only one where the tuning pegs have almost a quarter turn of free movement before they have any effect on the string tension at all, and that does not make me feel warm and fuzzy about taking an otherwise quite nice guitar on stage. Hence why I asked if anyone has suggestions as to which tuners might be suitable replacements, and not whether or not I should rethink my decision to change them, or if perhaps my nut just needs filing and lubrication. These tuners suck, and I do not care to "go out on a limb and live with" them. I do appreciate your attempt to save me $60, but the necessity of changing them was not a question... I'm not changing them because I have to, I'm changing them because I want to.

Hey brother! It's your axe and you have every right to do what the hell you want to do it. Forget that buzz kill! I always replace stock tuning keys on my guitars with locking ones. And yes there are vintage Kulson and Gotoh type tuning keys that fit so you don't have to butcher your axe. Shop around the internet (E-bay for example) and you will find better bargains than Stew-Mac. I am not knocking Stew-Mac, I buy products from them. It is just the simple fact they are like Gibson guitars, over priced! And on a final note, I have honey burst Modern Player myself with locking tuning keys that I bought for $49 and free shipping.

Hi. New to the forum. I too have the honeyburst modern player Tele. Where did you order your replacement tuners from. Also, does anyone have a recommendation for a replacement nut (Tusq, other) ? Thanks.

For tradition and feeling right, genuine bone nut made by a person who knows the job.
A TUSQ (made/fitted by a person who knows the job) is just as good, but it doesn't have that mystical quality a bone nut does.
IMHO, of course.
