Hello, I am the owner of a new Tele Thinline 72' Re-issue guitar with Humbuckers, made in Mexico. It sounds great and works for me. I got it from Guitar center. I have 2 questions:
1) I love the Humbuckers that came on my Tele, but played a USA Tele today with standard pickups, which sounded very "chicken pickin ' " to me. Is there that much difference in the various pickups?
2) Are all Tele's made with Ash bodies? Reason is another Thinline came in at Guitar Center to replace the one that I bought. It had beautiful wood on the body that looked very Maple to me complete with flamed patterns to the grain. Could it be Maple, and if so I wonder what the difference in sound is on a Tele. Regardless that guitar looked so nice that it got sold right away.

Thank you,
Craig

Big difference in pickups - especially when comparing the humbuckers in the Thinline to the singlecoils in the other tele. The main difference you were likely hearing though is the difference between a solid body with tele style bridge and the Thinline's semi-hollow body with different bridge.

Nice Guitar !

It's always difficult comparing Humbuckers to single coils, both very different animals.

While your '72 re-issue has an Ash body, most Telecasters are made from Alder, though there are also Mahogany, Pine, Basswood, Redwood models too.

I own 3 Telecasters, each with distinct pickups, and distinct Tone:

1999 Nashville Telecaster Deluxe

Image

This has an Alder body, RW fret board and Tex Mex pickups + a Tex Mex Strat middle pickup

2012 60th Anniversary Telebration Empress Telecaster

Image

This has an Empress Wood (Paulownia tomentosa) body w/ Maple fretboard and Hot Tele single coil alnico 3 pickups neck/bridge

2012 FSR Custom Telecaster HH

Image

This has a mahogany set neck (RW fretboard), mahogany body w/ hard tail bridge and active EMG Humbucker pickups - EMG 85 (neck), EMG 80 (bridge). .

All three of these are so different that trying to compare them is no better than throwing a Les Paul or Rickenbacker into the mix.

The most traditional (or Tele-like) of the three would likely be the 2012 60th Anniversary Telebration Empress Telecaster. This is because it has the traditional bridge and two single coils. But these pickups are 'hotter' than standard Telecaster single coils, so again, it's very different.

The only two requirements are that you love it (which you do), and that you play the heck out of it !!

cheers!

I own a Telecaster with a humbucker in the neck and love it. It's a very versitile guitar that I use for many different styles of music.

It appears that some of you do like your Tele's. As for me I did not want to sound like Hendrix or Jeff Beck, although the Strat is a wonderful guitar. I got it at Guitar Center during "15% Off Green Sale". Sorry about the messy room: Image

+1

Tonewoods are also an important factor, just sayin'.

I bought the same guitar under the same deal from the same vendor and I the same week! How ironic!

My first Tele had a Duncan designed humbucker in the neck and Duncan single coils in the bridge and mid with 5 way Strat switching. Was an awesome guitar.

Hi Paris,
Compare the small change to the IMG data line that I made, to get your pictures to show up.
(....After my page refreshed, your original posting pictures did show up, but with the IMG code showing in the post.)
BTW, Lovely Tele!!

Thanks for taking care of that for me. I'm just this side of being dangerous with technology. Also, thanks for you comment about the guitar. She is very nice, indeed. I had it built from many parts to be very similar, but not exactly like Andy Summers Telecaster.
Specs:
SD Jazz HB in the neck that has been coil split.
Broadcaster bridge pickup
5-way-switch (1. Bridge S, 2. SS, 3. SH, 4. Neck S, 5. HB)
An active Afterburner 20db Volume boost pot
A mid-range scoop tone pot.

On a side note, I was able to get Andy to sign the pickguard after his Q&A for the showing of his new movie. He was honest and answered everyone's questions in a polite and thoughtful manner.

The extra pot off to the side doesn't look bad! One of my Teles has a split tone knob to control the boost. When I decided I wanted piezos in my other Tele I wanted an extra pot to control them but decided to go with concentric pots with split knobs instead. With split knobs controlling the volume and tone for both the humbuckers and the piezos I didn't need an extra pot off to the side.

I swapped out one of my tele's and put a Lollar in it. Gives a nice sound variance when compared to my other two Tele's. I listened to as many Fender humbuckers in tele's as I could find, but I like this Lollar better.

The '72 Thinline RI (I have one) has a humbucker that looks like and tries to sound more like the CuNiFe Wide Range Humbuckers in the original '72 Thinline. While it succeeds fairly well on the treble end, it's unfortunately rather weak at the bottom end.
But it's still one of very few humbuckers you can play with quite a bit of the Tele "twang".

The hollowing out is also different from the original Thinline. For one thing, the original has a solid block of wood down the middle from the bridge pickup to the end of the guitar, while the '72 RI has another chamber there. It means you can't easily fit a Bigsby onto the new Mexican one.

Still a good guitar.

Saw a Tele just like it today when picked up my Rumble from the shop. Same place that I got mine and same color and everything. Except twice the price I paid a few years ago. Never expected a Squier to double in value! If was same price I think I would have bought it. Gave mine to my son and he will be moving out in a few years so won't be able to borrow it so much.
