Even in that HowCast video you can see how aggressively the player attacks it. Sure, equipment will matter, a bunch, but it won't have that magic without that very aggressive pick attack.

Also, not sure how much of a factor it's going to be or how much difference it makes, but SRV used to play with some pretty thick strings - 13s, IRRC.

Playing technique is more important than gear. If I were to be blessed with the opportunity to play through SRV's rig, I am positively certain that I would sound suspiciously like myself.

Likewise, if the Dearly Departed Mr. Vaughan were to be resurrected and pick up my main guitar (which is a modded Telecaster) and play through my rig (which has a few similar components to his, but is by no means the same), he would sound just like himself...Stevie was most famous for, and mostly played, Stratocasters, but he was known to pick up a few different guitars, as varied as a Jerry Jones Dano-styled Baritone, a Gibson 335, the Hamiltone "Main" (admittedly, a Strat-style axe), a Telecaster, a Rickenbacker, and even a Flying V (in one oddball clip of him playing live)...every time he sounded like himself.

Having said that, on occasions that call for it, I change my picking technique and can cop a fair (not exact) facsimile of either of the Vaughan Brothers tone...

If a person wants to see how technique (playing style) matters more than technical (musical gear), listen to Bill Kirchen's long version of "Hot Rod Lincoln"...he weaves in and out of about a dozen different guitarist's signature riffs and licks and effectively cops their tone, all on a basic Telecaster, with few-or-no effects...and he doesn't by changing fretting and picking techniques.
