Hey all, I was wondering if anybody knows how to get a Texas blues sounding, almost srv like tone from a telecaster. I would love some suggestions for pickups and other things to replace. I know that a tele won't perfectly nail a Stevie sound, but that's ok with me cuz I want to be a little unique with it. Thanks!

It's all down to the player's skill and touch!
It doesn't matter whether it's a Strat/Tele/Les Paul/ES335 - the most important thing is the player's skill and touch.

Plug into a tube screamer and then play through a dimed Fender amp.

If you are looking for a great tube screamer type pedal for a good price, with the best stomp switch on the market, grab one of these:

Visual Sound, V2RT808, Route 808 Overdrive Pedal
You can presently find this in the US for $100.00.

....Or if you want "double trouble":

Visual Sound V2DT Double Trouble Pedal
You can presently find this in the US for $150.00.

The Route 808 is endorsed by Gearmandude.

You might want to try an ABY switch and run a BFSR set to a chimey thump just on the verge of breakup along with a BFDR set to a semi snarling overdriven tone. It's fairly well documented that Stevie would take a half dozen amps into the studio and run them all simultaneously. Some clean, some crunchy. You'd want a TS808 for the leads. That kind of setup would require some cash but Stevie used real amplifiers. A simple stomp box prolly isn't going to get you there. You'll also need some great hands and an aggressive touch.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Assuming that the purpose of this thread was not to seek advice on buying a Dumble Steel String Singer, a Blutotone Bluto-Drive, a Two Rock Studio Pro, or a Fuches Overdrive Supreme, or other SSS style amps......(it may be much more interesting if it was), a good starting point for getting "SRV tone from a Tele," is with a Route 808 Overdrive Pedal, or similar TS808 style pedal, which there are many to choose from, and with an amp with a good clean channel.

And there are always those that advocate a Fender DRRI and a Zen Drive pedal to achieve a Robin Ford tone, if not SRV tone.
While I have never used that combination, I'm sure that you could find a similar tone from a similar combination.
The combinations really are limitless.
But if you have $70,000.00 to blow on an amp, go for the Dumble, if you can find one!!

The following link outlines SRV's various rigs, including the BSFR and BFDR with ABY switch that BMW-KTM discussed above:

Lollar Pickups here in Seattle make a Tele pickup that's designed to emulate a Strat sound. I have not tried it, but Lollar has a good reputation for quality pickups. http://www.lollarguitars.com/mm5/mercha ... er-pickups

I have a '76 Tele, and was looking for a little more bite, more Texas blues sound, and a few weeks ago I bought a set of Fender's Texas Special pickups for the Tele. I wish I could do an A/B, and really hear the difference, but overall these pickups sound good.

I also have a '93 Custom Shop "American Classic" Strat, and it has the Texas Special pickups. The Strat and my Tele with the Texas Specials are worlds apart in tone. Not even close. My Tele (which weighs 9.5 lbs) is much fatter and warmer than the Strat.

So, if the Strat/SRV type tone is what you're looking for, best option may be to just buy a Strat!

I could buy all the pedals, amps, and guitars in world and still not sound like SRV. I am doomed to sound like me

You cannot sound like SRV because you do not have the necessary "recipients" to nail his tone.

Of course you obviously need a Strat with Texas Specials, Rio Grandes, Van Zandts or any high-quality single coil pickup capable to handle that gritty roadhouse Texas Blues sound for which SRV is famous.

Amps and effects are also important factors: Stevie mostly ran his guitars through an old Fender Vibroverb and a tube screamer.

There's an alternative solution: buy a pre-2003 Custom Classic Telecaster!
