I've just bought a new Fender modern player series telecaster. The humbucker pickup is loose in its 'hole' (sorry, don't know the correct terminology).

Is this normal or have I got a faulty guitar?

It should be "loose" in the sense you can adjust the height, but not "loose" in the sense it moves around in the hole.

You bought a new guitar, has it been set up..?

Hi,

Thanks for your reply. I realise I need a proper setup but was surprised that the pickup moves around and seems unstable. Video here:

I guess I will take it back to the shop.

I've had a look at your video and there's nothing wrong with the pickup, other than it looks to be a little low in height.
It is not unstable - it's normal for 2 point suspended humbuckers to move around like that.

Thanks. It seems like there may be a very slight fault because only one of the height adjustment screws actually raises and lowers the pickup. The other seems to slip.

It's possible that the pickup has been lowered too far, and has dropped off the adjusting screw. The store should fix that easily!

I just bought a Tele modern player last week. I'm still waiting to get it back from the shop I dropped it off to have it set up. The bridge PU on mine has the same movement. I'm hoping to pick it up sometime tomorrow so I will ask him then.

You're welcome. I'm curious about that myself now. I thought it a bit strange when I noticed it, but I just thought it was normal - perhaps it is, but I will ask the Luthier when I pick it up, hopefully tomorrow.

I not long got back with my set up Tele Modern Player. Man it's like buttah! The action is so nice and low. Anyway, according to the Luthier, the bridge PU is fine. He explained to me that the PU shouldn't be solidly mounted to the body for tone reasons. If its mounted hard to the body, the PUs pick up sound waves from both the strings and body. So isolating the PU from the body as best as possible makes a difference in tone. Something of which heavy metal players prefer - so he says. That I don't know. I hope this helps, and I hope I got it right, but the main thing is, your PU arrangement is fine the way it is. Now you can sleep better tonight :D

I purchased a modern player tele last week in ghost silver. Was my first tele to add my growing Fender guitar collection & let me say what a sweet axe this tele is. Its become my number #2 next to my strat. A plus for me is the coil splitting capabilities of this fine looking instrument. I commend Fender on introducing modern features on their iconic instruments and tapping into a different market. Sad I did not purchase one sooner... Congrats to those who recently purchased one, may it bring you plenty of years of gun slinging :D
