I asked a similar question today but regarding the 'common' pick ups, but no one has answered. (Apart from the obvious)
Is there a difference between the bridge and neck pick ups on a tele and strat, anyone?

Teles have a different feel on the neck and the body feels different when you stand and play. That's the most obviouse differences.
The pickups are different electrically and placed differently for differnt voicing or tone. The standard control setup (the Volume and tone controls and pick up selection and combinations change the tone options as well.
Strat tradtionally sound thin and glassy; Teles have lots of bass and twang; a slight steel guitar sound if played with a slide but the right person.

I was about to say that it had more twang. Traditionally a Tele has a lipstick pickup in the neck position and a severely angled pickup at the bridge. (The angle allows for more twangy notes on the high end and more *earthy* tones on the low ones.) All of this allows for the Tele to have a very unique sound compared to a Strat or any other type of guitar.

not that much of a difference between the angles on the bridge pups

This is like asking what's the difference between a Blue Heeler and a Silky Terrier. They're both good dogs, but...

Originally, there were differences between the body shape, the body materials (typically, Teles are ash and Strats are alder, but there are many exceptions to that rule), the types of pickups, the type of bridge, the feel of the guitar (the scale is the same, but typically Teles have a stiffer feel) and of course, the tone.

It all goes down to personal taste; I own both a Telecaster and a Stratocaster, but I couldn't really say I like one more than the other...they play differently, they sound different, yet they both sound "Fender-ish". In studio, I typically choose whichever one sounds best for the song or track being recorded. But live, the Tele is usually tuned standard/440 and the Strat is tuned open G (for both slide and fingerpicking).

Good Vibes To Y'all... 8)

Also, most telelcasters do not have a middle position pickup
which can be ideal for players that like to finger pick alot...
I am a strat player...
I love the 'fits like a glove' comfort & ease I get from the shape of a strat.
but thats just me...

I'd say it has to be the pups. They sure sound different enough! I like em both, and I wouldn't give one up for the other.

Well there a many differences between the two. For starters, a tele is more focused towards todays country music whereas a strat is more versitile tone wise. And the strat has one more pickup and the neck is usually thinner and the body is usually lighter. I personally own a strat and a tele so it is really just your tonal choice.

Tone, sound, the way they play.
You can get a greater variety of sounds out of a Strat due to the greater number of pickup combinations available.
Tele's are more trebly (is that even a word!) but you know what I mean.
Tele's are more forgiving to play than Strats are.
I think Strats are more comfortable in general

My guitar teacher calls a Tele and the SG, slabs of wood. Now let's start with the simple basics. I believe the big difference is partly the bridge which is fixed on the tele and only one tone switch. The strat has three pickups and a 5-way switch and 2 tone switches and the tremelo bridge which makes a big difference. This gives a player a few more tonal options. That doesn't mean the Tele can match a strat tone for tone. Teles seem to be the forgotten axe when it comes to the blues. Look at some of the greatest blues players who played teles. Play punk, Teles have been there. Classic Rock, teles have been there. British invasions, the Teles have been there. Country, Teles have really been there. In the beginning a lot of groups in southern california were western swing players who all played teles and that trend has never stopped. When the strat came out, players wanted a lighter guitar, designed to be more comfortable, the third pickup, tremelo and all of those colors. The classic shot was the cover of the Buddy Holly 45 with him playing that seafoam blue strat. Necks and bodies aside, I believe the basic difference comes down to what a guitar player feels more comfortable playing. In the end it is the player who makes the biggest difference.

Good point -- I finger pick a lot but you expressed it perfectly. On the Teles (Hwy 1 and Thinline), I'm not constantly hitting anything. On the strat, I find that besides the middle pup, I can also hit the switch once in a while.

Finally, of course, the Thinline with humbuckers is a somewhat different case again. With that, I find the tone very bluesly because of the pups and the semi-hollow body. It's easier to get some of the more roots like sounds out of that than it would be on a Strat.

I am thinking of adding another thinline. A partscaster two F-Holes and a set of TV Jones Tele Pups. It should be as good if not better than a Gretsch.
