Hey All,
I've got a Classic Series 60's neck on my Robben Ford build. Only issue is the E and B strings sound like a sitar when I play them open. So, I have to replace the nut. I suppose I could repair the existing nut but this seems much easier.
Being as I don't have access to it for a few days and I want to order a nut, do I want a curved bottom or a flat bottom as a direct replacement?
LOVE these necks by the way!
Thanks all!

1- Why do you say it is the nut ? What test did you do ?

If nut is not broken in 10 pieces it is easier to fix a old nut than to put a new one.

Relief is good, string height is good, I put some material in the slots and the buzzing was gone. Everything that I've read and heard says that the "sitar syndrome" is caused by nut slots that are not properly cut. I don't have a set of nut files to re-cut this one. I bought a brand new 60's neck direct from Fender with a pre-cut nut that was supposed to need finishing, but it was perfect with 10's when I strung it up. This neck was used, it seems that the nut was not done well.
That's what I'm going off.
You have another idea? I'm open.

New neck often need some work on nut .

Show us the link about sitar syndrome you talk about

I don't know what is you experience and skill to say , relief is good , ...did you check fret height ?

Better to buy some nut files than complete new nut wich may need to be file
Nut files are always useful and put a new nut is not easy

You can use old strings as nut file , re Stew Mac book .

Or see a qualified luthier .

Appreciate the reply.
I have a what I'd call limited experience...doing my own setups, Strat and Tele builds, and electronics work. I haven't done any finishing or filing work.
I can't point you to a specific source for the sitar thing, but having researched to figure out where this sound was coming from (and having waaaay more guitars than chops at this point), there were so many experienced luthiers telling me the same thing. Then when I tried putting some material in the slot and it worked...?????
So, that's where I am coming from. I have a "guy" who has built several guitars for me, and he suggested the nut as well. I haven't brought it to him just because I am trying to learn to do more on my own. I'm picking up a Les Paul and a 335 that he's working on...I may bring this Tele for his in-hand opinion.
Thanks again.

So my original question remains unanswered...curved or flat bottom replacement nut?

Buy both , 2 X $11

Cheaper than a luthier :)

It's a MIM, so taking a wild guess: radiused.
BTW and IMHO, there are no drop-in replacement nuts. The nut is crucial to the tuning, playability and sound (IMHO) so you have to work it perfect.

In case you aren't investing in nut files, here are Ceri's instructions to fix a pre-cut nut
Scroll down to "Bluffer's nut files" section.

Woa, easy now - I just made that remark because of your "do I want a curved bottom or a flat bottom as a direct replacement".
On a forum, it's impossible to know anyone's skill levels & knowledge base - so sometimes I repeat the obvious. Not meaning to cast doubt on you or anyone else.

I'm cool...didn't intend any tone in that reply...just wanted folks to know where I'm coming from. Should have probably clarified that I knew there was work to be done...just want to get as close as possible to start.
I just have to decide if investing in the files is a good idea long term. It probably is, as I have a ton of guitars (it's embarrassing a little but...it's my "thing"). May try that string/paper thing first considering a) ruining a nut isn't catastrophic to the instruments and b) I have a great luthier/tech that I can go cry to if need be.
I'm grateful for the responses!

jbear,
You can repair nut slot with baking soda and crazy glue or better I sand the top of the nut and I use this "powder" and crazy glue to fill a damage nut slot
