Hey guys, I'm looking to buy a new Fender Telecaster, preferably second hand. I want a telecaster from the 90's or earlier because i want to start a collection! :)

I don't have a strong understanding of value on telecasters and i was considering to buy this for my first telecaster.

Do you think this is worth it?

This is also a possibility.

Could you guys recommend a place to buy old but nice telecasters? I like the wood look a lot!

PS. My budget for this guitar is probably $1500.

Thanks

Guessing you are in Australia? Haven't been there in about 35 years so no idea on the exchange rate but $1500 USA dollars can buy a very nice used(or new) Tele.

If you are starting your collection as a fun investment, buy something all original. If you want to have fun, play, and sell off one here and there after getting too old to play(my Dad quit last year after a good 60 or so years  ) just buy what sounds, feels, and looks good to you!

Thanks for all the advice.

So basically I've decided to purchase a new telecaster for my first because the quality old ones don't seem to be worth the price. I also read that the Japanese Telecasters are top of the range so i browsed the store and have come down to these 3.

The first of the 3 guitars is this.

Now i think these two guitars are identical, however, just listed differently.

This second guitar of the 3 is very similar to the 1st, however it is a limited edition and has a black scratchboard and is an extra $300 or so. I am happy to spend the extra money if it is worth buying the L.E.

Lastly, this guitar is probably my favourite.

I don't know much about the specs or features of guitars, so could you guys just suggest one to buy?

Thank you all so much :)

I have a feeling that the number in the model name is the year they are copying. The TL52 looks like a 52 reissue, the first two are different guitars for sure. An American 52 will have a nitro finish. I have a feeling that the Japanese might all be finished with polyurethane. The rosewood one has black sides and they might be doing that to cover the fact that the top is a veneer or that the body is not solid rosewood. I say go with an American Fender but I don't know what your budget is.

You're asking a question that's impossible to answer...
(It's basically "which guitar would I like and would be a good start to a collection".)

What do you consider the most important factors? Sound, versatility, playing preferences, resale value, original price, collectibility predictions etc. etc. etc..?

Just as a general remark: usually MIJ Fenders are very nice guitars.

Edit: The Rosewood Tele is "rosewood/basswood/rosewood" (I'm not saying it's bad, though; the construction is comparative to FMT's and Richie Kotzen signature, e.a.).
All available MIJ specs can be found in the http://www.fenderjapan.co.jp site.

I have to be honest, I have many guitar playing friends, most of whom play Lesters.

Surprisingly, at least to me, every one of these guys absolutely LOVE my Set-Neck Fender FSR Custom HH Telecaster w/ active EMGs !!

This is the least expensive, most non-Fender, Telecaster in my Stable of 3... but there is something wonderful whenever I pick it up to play... so I'm not in dis-agreement with them at all.

I think YOU should go play a LOT of Teles before deciding, but I would advise not looking past the unconventional before choosing.

cheers!
