Back in "The Vintage Days" the G string was wound and intonated much the same as the D so they were able to share the same saddle without any problem
I'll just add that the three barrel Tele bridge was a step up when it was introduced. In the early days of electric guitars, the bridges (non-adjustable) were inherited from acoustic/archtop guitars.

Sometimes is like trying to steer on ice with bald tires but thought there might be someone out there reading through the wood war waiting for the answer to the original bridge question. Might not be the right answer, but is the best explanation I've heard so far.

The original Tele bridge was a definite improvement over what was available back then. Not much to adjust and you had to accept it as it was so it was more important to try as many as you could before buying. With a Tele you could buy knowing that even if it felt off at the store it wouldn't take long after you got it home to have it playing just like you want it. Instead of "I like the sunburst but that white one is easier on my fingers".
