I recently bought a brand new Fender American Special Telecaster Vintage/Butterscotch Blonde (shown in this video) and when I went to remover the plastic covering over the neck pickup I had to almost remove the pickup because the plastic was wrapped all the way to the bottom (which was pretty annoying :? ) but after I removed the plastic I realized I no longer was going to be able to play my guitar as it was setup from the factory because of having to do what I did (... annoyed). Of course I may make adjustments to the pickup but I'd like to play it first as it came from the factory. What are the factory pickup height settings for my guitar and also does anyone know what strings came on my guitar from the factory? I love the strings! Thanks!

I believe all Fenders come factory with Fender bullet strings either .009 or .010 (you should be able to feel the difference). As far as the height of the pickups, I think that's one of those things you need to experiment with on your own a little bit. They're usually about a half inch or so from the string, but since adjusting them requires 5 seconds with a screwdriver and is easily reversible with no damage or wear whatsoever, I'd say play around with it. I set them differently on each of my guitars. Generally speaking, the hotter the pickup, the farther away from the string I put them. Making them higher will increase response and perhaps sustain, but also may make it too harsh sounding and will change the tone. The only thing to watch out for is putting them so high that when you palm mute or play a high note, it touches the pickups. Guitar stores changes them, people before you have probably played it, and the fact it was shipped from a factory through a mail carrier means that you probably didn't receive the guitar exactly how it was sent out of the factory, and even if it was, it all comes down to preference. My advice is to not get too technical and "proper" with those things and try what you like. For me personally, I'd set a Tele on the higher side to get better response with lower output pickups and give more of a twang.

Best of luck.

The AmSpecial ships with "Fender® USA 250L, NPS (.009-.042 Gauges)" strings, which can be found in the product page:
AmSpecTele

The factory recommendations for Texas Specials are 8/64"/3.6 mm lowE side & 6/64"/2.4 mm highE side, (string bottom to pole top, measured when the string is pressed on the last fret).
Telecaster SetUp Guide

The factory does a checkup on guitars, but it ain't final (travel, climate and player preferences, etc.).
So the only way to buy a guitar that's completely ready to play is to buy it from a store that does the setup job for you. Support your local moms&pops.

It's the exact opposite (unless you go through a fuzz or other tracking pedal that gives artificial sustain based on loudness). The closer the poles are to the string, the more the magnets will dampen the strings as they vibrate, and the less sustain you will have.

The correct answer is that sustain will be maximized in the middle, between being too high, and too low, for the obvious reasons, as will the quality of the amplified sound.
