This is the headstock of my 2005 US Standard Tele (serial: Z5138260)

This is the headstock of my 2012 US Special Strat

My question is: Why is "FENDER" written differently on each headstock? This got me wondering if the Tele is fake as i bought it 2nd hand about 4 months ago. Can you see how on the Strat it's more continuous, where as on the Tele there are small spaces between some of the letters. I'm really worried I've been ripped off so if anyone can help it would be much appreciated.

Thank you!
(and Happy New Year!!)
:-)

The Tele has what is known as the sphagetti logo, similar to those found on pre CBS Fenders.
The Strat has a later CBS logo.

The logos changed over time, and the Sphagetti logo has been used more often in recent years unless the guitar in question is one based around a specific time frame.
The headstock on the Strat is similar to the Strats from the late 60s to the late 70s, hence the different logo.

Fender has used different Logos through the years and through different ownership (Fender, CBS and current).

There is no strict Rhyme or Reason for it. Silver is typically for Telecasters while Stratocasters are typically Gold. But, not always...

Both Teles and Strats have been produced w/ Black Logos, while some Customs, Ltd. Editions and FSRs have/do come w/ Chrome Inlay Logos.

My FSR, Ltd. Ed. Stratocaster is Gold, my Nashville Telecaster Deluxe is Silver while my Custom Telecaster HH and my American Deluxe Ash are Chrome Inlay.

Judging from your Headstock pics alone, both guitars look genuine to me.

cheers!

Simplest explanation - as the others said the Fender logo evolved over the years - one version when Leo owned the company, then it evolved through 3 different versions during the CBS years. The one on your American Standard Tele is similar to the logo used in the Leo era. Fender has been using that "vintage style" Fender logo with the small lettering for the model name on American Standards since 1995.

The logo on the American Special Strat is based on the 1970s logo used during the CBS era (technically used from 1968-1982). The American Specials have always used the large logo; Fender started using that large logo on the predecessors of the American Specials (the Highway 1 series) in 2006.

Fender likes to use different logos on different model series - not counting the reissue models. Since they are recreating a specific year, they use the proper logo for the year in question. For example, the American Vintage '65 Strat, Jazzmaster and Jaguar use yet another decal style that was only used from 1965 through 1967.

That gold transitional decal was introduced during the second half of 1964; it was originally applied to the Jazz Bass in late 1959/early 1960.
