Do the tone caps on an elec guitar go bad or change with age. I'm considering changing the caps on my 73 tele custom? (40+ yrs old). Also what type of caps should I use if I do? Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Don't do that !

You got a nice vintage guitar keep it original . Caps is good for your life and more , if value drop, it is like your pickups or guitar wood wich change with time , it is the mojo .

If you have the bad idea to do it , keep your cap in safety place , this give value on the guitar .

No break , don't fix it.

Thanks for the advice. I'll leave it as is. Toggle switch and pots are a little scratchy. Do you think its ok to clean them and what should I use?

Use any good electric / electronic contact cleaner , one with silicone lubricant is the best .
You may find some at Radio Shack or any store like that .

You should have access under the pots and spray on the side where is the 3 lugs there is a hole.
Do not spray from the shaft side, it is useless.

There is a small hole on others side too , corner with the back.

After you spray contact cleaner you should turn the shaft all way at least 10 times . This remove dirt.

When no contact cleaner available , just turn shaft at least 10 time and more often it do the job .
