Hi all,
I need a bit of advice about some strap pins. I have 2 telecasters, a Mexican Cabronita and I also use a Squier Telecaster as a back-up in case anything goes wrong with my main guitar. I was playing my Squier the other night and I noticed that one of the pins had come loose in my guitar and will no longer tighten up. I use Fender Chrome Strap Locks in both guitars, which is essential as I play in a band not dissimilar to The Chariot and The Dillinger Escape Plan, not using strap locks would be foolish. Is there any kind of temporary, quick solution to this (as I have 3 gigs next week) until I can sort out a more permanent solution?
Thanks

If I understand you right, the screws that hold the strap buttons in the guitar have come loose in their holes..?
To that, there are at least three solutions:
Traditional way: put a piece of a toothpick and a drop of wood glue in the hole. This tightens the hole so the screw will hold.
Moderner way: mix a drop of rapid epoxy, apply inside the hole with a toothpick, repeat as many times as necessary. This also tightens the hole; the epoxy and the wood dust form a nice hard layer, and IME (in my experience) this holds longer.
I-won't-mess-with-glues way: Put in a bigger screw (remember to check the hole size so you won't crack the wood or the finish).

The original cause is that the metal screw cuts the wood to pulver. Happens in every guitar if you screw/unscrew often, and IME basswood is more prone to this than harder woods.

From my experience working with wood as a hobby for a long time:
Pine < Linden (basswood) < Mahogany < [big jump here] < other hardwoods

What also affects durability is whether the screws follow the pulp or cross the grain. If a screw thread has to tear fibers across to come loose, it's much more secure.

The first thing I do when installing strap lock buttons is to find longer screws and toss the stock screws altogether. Those locker buttons are always coming loose if you don't ... and then you have to find a repair strategy. It's far better to ensure they don't come loose in the first place. A small pilot hole, maybe 1/16" or 5/64" helps the screw find a way into the wood while increasing gription. A periodic check of the new, longer screws is also beneficial. Since I started doing this, my buttons wear out long before the wood does.

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.
