I picked up a Johnny Marr jaguar last week so I traded my CIJ Jaguar for this on Saturday, a 2009 Fender Baja Tele. Mexican made but with a difference. It's got a Fender Custom Shop Broadcaster pickup in the bridge and a Custom Shop Twisted Tele pickup in the neck. It's also got four way switching instead of three, and like my Marr Jaguar, joins the two pickups together into a big humbucker in the 4th position. It's previous owner did a number of additional upgrades with the wiring and pots, jack plug as well as GOTOH locking tuners, a Joe Barden bridge and Schaller strap locks. It's five years old but looks brand new and comes in a lovely blonde finish. The neck is like a baseball bat with a soft V shape which I love as I've got big hands.

The Baja Telecaster has an S-1 switch for more knockout tonal possibilities in addition to the 4-way pickup selector.

With the S-1 button pressed down and the pickup selector in the 4th position, the pickups are phased out for a mellower jazz sound.

The American Standard Telecaster uses the same pickups minus the fancy wiring scheme.

Some nice classic style sweetness in that Tele. Enjoy it.

A beauty!!!
Enjoy it, I currently have under evaluation for purchase one of these, in blonde finish...she sounds very very nice, in all 4 positions. S-1 not so useful for my tastes... my fisrt experience with a tele.
The neck is very comfortable and I prefer it over my strat American standard and my '87 strat mij.
I find it very resonant and loud when played unplugged, moreover I don't know why but bending was easier and I ended setting it up with 0.11 strings while my strats are loaded with 0.10.

So this is my first post on this forum. Just bought my first tele (a Baja, desert sand) and I don't know what I was thinking before this! Forget the Les Pauls, the 335s (even the strats). Love the neck, love the tone. Definitely a guitar for grown-ups. :)

Does anyone know if all Bajas have the S-1 switching? My serial number says it's a 2009, and mine doesn't have it. It's got the 4-way switch. Trying to figure out if mine's been modified, or if they came that way at one time.

I bought a Baja Tele when they were first released in 2006. I went with the Desert Sand finish because I live in the desert... go figure. :)

It has been one of my favorite guitars since then. An American Standard and an American Deluxe have come and gone but the Baja remains. It's that good.

Here's an outdoor pic of my Desert Sand Baja with a desert background.

holadudes, I don't recall seeing a Baja without an S-1 switch. As far as I know it has been a standard feature since 2006.

Beautiful. The butterscotch blonde is more popular, but I prefer the desert sand.

Love it! Congrats. I miss my Baja and am currently looking for a replacement. Gotta love that chunky neck!

Fender added another baja Tele in their Classic Player series with '60s features and different pickups. Same wiring scheme as the original baja Telecaster.

All Bajas came with the S1. Someone has removed the switch because he disliked that fancy wiring scheme. Your guitar has been modified.

There are so many modifications on it that I wouldn't call it a Baja at all, if it even started out that way. Pickups, bridge, control plate, wiring, strap locks, socket, tuners, pickguard - you name it.
I'd call this a heavily modded MIM, but not a Baja, cause there's nothing Baja left.
As such, it would be worth what a used Mexican Standard is worth, around $300.

The Baja is a great guitar, wish I'd never sold mine when my band split :(
