Hey guys, I've been searching for a telecaster for a while now that doesn't have a scratch plate and no matter where I look I always seem to end up with the FMT Telecasters. I love these guitars, however I want to see if there are any more options available to me and weigh up the different possibilities. I know I "could just take off the scratch plate" from one of my current teles but it just looks messy with the screw holes and a custom build is a terrible idea, I'd more than likely end up with a spice rack my DIY skills are that bad. If anyone can suggest anything that would be awesome, cheers!

The Select HH has no pickguard. The Cabronitas have sorta half a pickguard. I believe those and the FMT's are Fender's choices.

I don't see the custom built as a terrible idea, if you order the guitar from some gtr-shop that knows his/her business... Haar, Ron Kirn, Crook, Rice are all nice if they fit your budget, and plenty others to be found.

Taking the scratchplate off a standard Tele reveals not only the screw holes but also some gruesome pickup cavities, so IMHO that's a terrible idea. But whaddoIknow, I prefer the Teles with pickguards anyway.

My 2013 Fender FSR Custom Telecaster HH - Black w/ Cream Binding (center below) has no pickguard. With it's carved-top Mahogany Body and Mahogany Set Neck it's a bit weighty, but well balanced.

It's a really nice, though somewhat different, Telecaster. Good playability and Tone. Certainly on-par with my more traditional Telecasters.

cheers!

Thanks a lot for the reply, I actually already have a cabronita funnily enough and I absolutely love it! Cheers for the suggestions, I'll be sure to have a look. I was maybe slightly vague with the custom build thing, what I meant was that me personally building one was a terrible idea haha! Wow that tele is stunning! Is that a custom made?

Nope.

It is a 2013 Fender FSR Custom Telecaster HH w/ EMG (81/85) active pups. It is a modern Tele body w/ Belly Cut, bound sides and set Mahogany neck.

Though Indonesian-made, the craftsmanship and materials are excellent.

The off-shore manufacturers for Fender having really up'd their game in the past few years - great value-for-$.

I got this one for Dealer cost, but Retail (Street Price) they're slightly less than an MIM standard Tele.

That's awesome! I have to agree about the overseas manufacturers, my Mexican cabronita is phenomenal. Thanks a lot for the help, I'll definitely be putting it on my short list

Just think of how awesome a guitar player you could have been by now if you had only spent the last 10 years practicing instead of obsessing over pickups and roasted maple necks.

Yup... That's the Sister guitar to mine.

The difference is the SDs vs. the EMGs (and color).

The EMGs have a good reputation in their own right and I'm very pleased w/ the Tone. The downside is that you need to remember to have a backup 9V battery with you because if the battery dies...no sound !!

But, the circuit is inactive if you don't have the cord plugged in. I'm still on the original battery after almost 18 mos.

That said, I had the thought, should the EMGs fail for whatever reason, rather then replace them, I'd consider putting in a set of PAFs or Seth Lovers instead. I think those could be very interesting.

cheers!

On that "overseas models" section, there are some interesting MIJ's in the fenderjapan site. Like the flower patterned TL69 Tele or the Richie Kotzen Black version

You're right, there are some cool looking models on there.
I better pull up the floorboards and dig out my stash of Japanese Yen

Solidbody electrics lacking off a pickguard are better known as "backrouted" - a term which usually refers to electronic components housed in the rear side of the body.
