it is pretty customable(in the lack of an better word right now)

i have a friend who works at a music store and he has a Tele where he changed the neck and the he put on new frets on the new neck and new tuners and new nut!
he changed the pickups the bridge he changed for an piezo bridge from Fishman
he changed all the electronics and the pickguard!...

so he has changed out everything exept the body so you can definitly customize a Tele!....

You can mess with a tele a lot. Fenders in general allow for a lot of customization. Easy pickup replacement, easy neck replacement, easy electronics modifications, easy bridge replacement etc. I'm building my own at the moment and i'm just working on getting the funds to buy the neck. This is basically my dream tele and is completely customized for me.

You can do lots with a Tele and all the variants Fender offer. I thought the same as you when I got my first one, but it's best to get the best one your pocketbook will allow and live with it - stock - for maybe a week. You will be able to make a better informed decision on what you want to change after some hours/days playing.
So, what did I do? Nothing!!! properly adjusted the Tele and the Esquire (got two of each) are really very good and I felt that changes were not necessary. Leo pretty much hit the bullseye very early on.
If you want, say, a humbucking sound, get a different guitar as well, because the math of spending on pickups/pots/bridges/labour can very quickly equal another complete guitar. I know, been there!

I just picked up a new tele myself and decided to put in some 51' custom shop pick ups and they totally rule the school! It cost about 190 bucks, 150 for the pick ups, 40 for the install but well worth it. I got my tele on sale for about 500 bones and I consider it one of the best I've ever owned, almost up there with my custom G & L Legacy.

the first thing i ever do when i get one is change the bridge to a vintage 3 brass barrel. the tele and the strat are so easy to mod, and sound so go after most mods, it is fun just to see what u can do with them

I hav a hh fmt tele that i am going to turm into a PRS tele, put a 82 prs vintage bass in the neck and a pearly gates in the bridge. add a rotarty switch and push/pull pots
