Hi All

I have a MIM Black Top tele with a gloss finish (body and neck), but I recently bought a AM Std Strat that has a satin finished neck which is definitely my kind of feel. What would
the procedure be of getting my tele neck to the same satin finish as my strat?

I have tried 1200 grit paper on the neck of an old acoustic, but it seems that this is even
to rough and "dulls" the finish too much, should I be aiming for 2000 grit paper?

Thanks

The paper grades go (at least) up to 4000, so if you're in any doubt, start with the finest you can find. I use 1600 or 2000, which ever happens to be at hand.

My instructions for the job: use good wet/dry paper, cut the sheet in half, let it soak for a few minutes - a drop of Fairy in the water is a nice touch. Fold the paper and sand the neck lenghtwise, letting the paper wrap to the neck profile - don't oversand: really just a couple of strokes will do the job. Dry the neck with a cotton cloth.

BTW, the neck feel will probably not be exactly the same on the Blacktop and AmStd. But: some just don't like gloss necks...

Thanks Jmattis

I just want it "not gloss" because I prefer the smoothness of the Satin feel. So my
main problem is finding the finer grit paper, here in SA it's quite difficult to find anything
finer than 1200, so I will be doing some research on finding the paper.

Thanks so much for the advice.

The American Standard necks had a satin back but the fretboard and front of the headstock are glossy.

Rather than using sand paper, I'd use pumice. Small rag w/ light oil in it so that the powdered pumice sticks, then hand rub. I've done this often to rifle stocks when I wanted a satin finish, but not to a guitar neck.....don't know why it wouldn't work well on the guitar.

Jeepers. I used 220 and am perfectly happy with the look and feel.

With dry hands, my hands move quicker on a satin neck, for sure.
For one of my babies, I covered up everything except the back of the neck, and gave it a quick spray of matte acrylic lacquer, then a couple of rubs with a fine grade emery paper.
