Hey all! I want to repaint a Telecaster that I purchased about two years ago. It is a Classic Player 50's Tele MIM. in what I assume was either a white or off white color. Well the previous owner took little care of it, and its all chipped and scraped, and I really want to go with a black paint job for the redo.. Does anybody know what I could use to get a near Fender paint finish? I am trying to avoid a cheap paint job. Jim

You need more professional spray gun and ,.....knowlege than just paint.

I'm not saying don't, but sit and think awhile.

1. The way to avoid a cheap paint job is not to do it cheap.

2. Comparing costs: buying a black pre-used body may be cheaper than a paint job done by a pro, or even doing it yourself if your start point is zero tools, zero materials.

3. If you absolutely want to DIY, start here: ReRanch
Then: practice, practice, practice the materials, tools etc. on scrap wood.

BTW, some people pay a lot of dollars for artificially relic'd guitars.

I refinished my Standard Strat from it's original Midnight Wine color to a Sonic Blue lacquer from ReRanch.

If you follow the steps, you might surprise yourself with great DIY results.

For me, I was in doubt the whole way through until I got to the final step of buffing the clear coat with polishing compound. Then, the magic started to happen. Beautiful, smooth, gloss finish with very few flaws. Most of those are on the back.

True! In fact, the truest test is playing it or at least holding it. It's not perfect on the back side, but the top is remarkably professional looking and feeling - considering I did it in my garage and had no prior experience.

Re-ranch really is a gold mine of instructional insight for anyone willing to give it a shot.
