I have a "Black Chrome" edition of the standard squire telecaster. I really love the guitar and the way it plays but the sound is darker than expected from (in my mind at least) a telecaster. To my surprise, I discovered when I pulled the control plate to tighten the input jack, that it has 500k tone pots. I am certainly no expert, but I had understood from my past reading that most single coil pickups only require 250k pots and that 500k-1000k pots were used more for humbucker pickups. Would changing the tone pots "lighten up" the sound or should I be looking for a pickup and pot change together? I really think I would like to go with Texas Specials but if I can do something simple and inexpensive, I would prefer to do that.

The 250k pots are what's in most, but before I changed them, or anything else, I'd tweak the height adjustment on your pups. That can make a big difference also. Maybe they need to be raised/lowered a bit :?:

Good luck !

500k Pots wil work on single coil pickups OK 250K are more desirable, There should be a huge difference though.

Played a Tele where someone put 1 meg pots in it...Sounded Like Total Mud. I agree with raising the pickups up a tad to see what happens

If you go to the Squier website and look at the wiring diagrams for the Telecasters, they all use 500k pots, though 250k is usually used for single coils in most cases...

Thanks for the input. I ended up putting in full size 500K pots and a .022 mf tone cap, AND raising the pickups. The pickups in this are wound hotter than in standard pickups. It sounds great! the bridge is really hot and pretty clear, the neck is hot and still a little muddy (especially compared to the Tone Rider Hot Classic Neck in my other tele) but has great character. overall I've got the bases covered with my 2 teles.

Oh, I also changed the Bridge on both my teles to the Wilkinson Vintage style with the compensated brass saddles-well worth the money.
