Hi guys- hoping you can help me answer a few things on this Custom Shop '72 Closet Classic Custom Telecaster. I've just recently purchased one of these from a seller on Ebay for $2400 (I think these retail somewhere around $3400). It was listed as a new / display model, & came with all of the certificate's of authenticity, new case, tool kit, cord etc, & by all appearances, seems to play/sound great. I have one concern- there is a significant gap between the neck & body on the top side (bottom is flush). Also, you can see where the strings are not properly aligned with the neck as a result of this. The high E sits right on the very bottom of the neck almost off the fret itself. I wasn't sure if this was a normal thing can be easily adjusted, or if something looks a bit fishy. I'm just hoping that everything is authentic & that nothing has been changed & passed off as original. But for a guitar that goes for that kind of money, it's hard to believe that it would come out of the factory like that. Any info you can provide would be greatly appreciated. As I said, it still plays great, looks pretty much new other than the fact that someone clearly wiped the guitar off with something that left a lot of little hairline scuffs in the finish & pick guard (nothing deep, just surface). If this is a simple case of adjustment, then I'm not too worried about it, but it looks like that gap is about the thickness of a guitar pick. Thanx for your help ! -Jamie Coville / New York, NY

The neck seems to be in need of alignment:

Just a humble suggestion: you paid 2400$ for the guitar. Now take it to a luthier for a full & proper setup: that sets you back about a 100$ more. Well worth it.

No, we cannot, because you did not post any pictures.

Anyhow, let it sit for a week in your climate/humidity, and then go see a luthier for a setup.

I've added a few pics here (hope they show up:/ It just seemed that even if you adjusted the neck, it still wouldn't be an airtight fit. Maybe it's not such a huge deal to have a slight bit of space in there; I've just never seen one that had such a gap.

That imageshack is the Devil's invention... and don't trust the friendly Asian ladies behind pic links, either.
Anyway, pics show that the neck needs to be realigned. DIY if you will, instructions in the link I posted above.
Better yet, take it to a pro for a setup - if the neck is so much out of place sideways, who knows how the setup otherwise is.

BTW, a bolt-on neck joint is seldom airtight - and it doesn't have to be.
