So, As part of my Stratocaster collection, I have three E Series Strats (three of the Kahler Spyder equipped, No Country of Origin models from 1988).

Question is, are there similar Telecasters? That is to say, are there 1988 - 1989 era E Series Telecasters that have no stamped country of origin? The Strats from that era (purportedly Japanese but possibly having been assembled and/or set up in the USA) are such great guitars that I would like to seek out a similar Tele...

Just curious if anyone has any info.

Thanks in advance!

Since "E Series" refers only to the serial numbers used in the late '80s, I would say, "Most likely."

Fender is famous for using things up before using the new product. This pertains to serial numbers for the most part, but you can also see this with Fender logos, pickups, and some parts.

For instance, I have a '75 Strat with a '74 neck pickup. It's in fact the original pickup. The person putting in the pickups just grabbed 3 pickups. From Fender's stand point, it's just 3 pickups.

Not a dopey question, and the answer is "yes and no".

Yes, there were MIJ Teles that had serial numbers that started with an "E". And yes, some of those were "Contemporary" series Teles in the 1985-1987ish era; there were 2 models - one with 2 humbuckers, one with an HSS pickup setup, the gloss black neck (I think both models had the black neck; the HSS might have only had the black headstock), TBX tone control, coil split switch for the humbuckers, and some of the other features of the various Contemporary Strat models. Both of the Contemporary Teles originally had the System 1 tremolo on them, and like the Strat models these change to the Kahler 2520 "Traditional" trem but kept the Schaller-built behind the nut string clamp as used with the System 1. These were discontinued when all of the "Contemporary" series was dropped except for the "Contemporary Standard 22" Strat.

Here is the “no” part – there was no "Contemporary Standard 22" type Tele (one with all single coils and a trem system) so there was no Tele version of the "no country of origin" Strats with the Kahler Spyder trems. The closest you will find are the HM Teles - but I want to say they were always marked MIJ, but they could be "no country of origin" just like the HM Strats.

John, thanks for that info. I'm not so much trying to find a trem equipped Tele as I am one that was produced ing he same manner as the no country E series Strats. They're just so good, that finding a similarly produced Tele would be great.
