is there any reason the headstock of the telecaster was shaped the way it is compared to the Stratocaster? or vice versa?

Well, the Stratocaster was supposedly named and designed to reflect the the cool new "space" era, but don't ask me how ANY of the Strat's styling reflects that. (I guess if you lived through that time, it did do that then--but now looking at in retrospect, it doesn't.)

But what doesn't make sense at all about this theory is that the Strat was introduced in 1954, but the first object that went into orbit, Sputnik 1, didn't happen until 1957--and THAT's when everyone went space crazy.

Function and serviceability. That's what Leo went for. Try sketching a 6-on-one-side headstock without excess timber on the non-machinehead side. Remember, no frills, just function.
And there you will see a Tele (or very nearly Tele!) headstock.
The Strat headstock was made bigger in order to incorporate some styling, because by then Bill Carson, Don Randall and others were taking note of market forces and telling Leo. Even so, the Strat headstock of '54 - '65 still demonstrates restraint.

Both the Tele and Strat headstocks are great designs in terms of aesthetics and function, but I like to think of the Tele headstock as the more original of the two. The Strat headstock pays homage to its forerunners such as Paul Bigsby's guitar he built for Merle Travis in 1947 and the 19th-century Stauffer guitars out of Austria.

Both the Telecaster and Stratocaster are icons, from the headstock on down. 8)
