A piece of the nut on my friends MIM Telecaster has broken off at the 6th string. It's about 200 miles round trip to a Luthier so I want to try and replace it myself. I've found some online that are already slotted with the 7.25" radius, there is one that is flat on the bottom and another one that has the radius on the top and bottom. I'm not sure which one I should get. We need the guitar every week for a gig we do and it's still playable so I don't want to take the nut off until I get the replacement, does anyone know which one I should get? Also in the slotted they have Tusq and unbleached bone, any suggestions to which one is best?

First off, you will want to confirm the radius of the fretboard leaving no room for uncertainty before you do anything. Don't just make an assumption because you are pretty sure you know what model it is and therefore it should have "X" radius. Measure it or have it measured.
If you want to measure it yourself you can find the tools here.

You say time is not an issue yet.

Here are the two genuine Fender parts currently available in retail:

Standard

Vintage

You will note the model numbers are shown in the upper left part of the picture area. Use that number when speaking to your local Fender dealer or an online dealer.

I have the radius measuring tools from StewMac, and the top radius on mine is 7.25". I didn't know about the Fender source, Thanks for that. The Fender nuts looks like the "standard" has a top radius of 9.25" and the bottom radius of 7.25" and the "vintage" has a top radius of 7.25" and the bottom radius of 9.25" or just the opposite of each other. I would have thought that the top and bottom would be the same! StewMac has two with both the top radius's at 7.25", one has a radius of 7.25" on the bottom and the other one is flat. I think I need to order the one that's 7.25" on top and bottom, the one according to the picture with the flat bottom looks a lot higher, most likely needing a lot of sanding to get to the proper height. I just might have to remove mine to see if the bottom is flat or what the radius is.

Just bought both it is so inexpensive :D

I would you carpenter glue to fix the nut to the neck . Solid and "easy " to remove.

I read that on book by Dan Elrlewine from Stew mac

melamine (synthetic bone)
(from BMW-KTM's link)

What..!?
Funny, but synthetic bone sounds a lot better than melamine - my brain connects it to low quality furniture...

I'd recommend either of these.

I bought the 7.25" radius top and bottom, unbleached bone, preshaped and preslotted from StewMac ($21.93 including shipping). From the pics this one looks like it might take less work to finish. I'll post the results as they develop, Thanks to everyone for the info ! :D

Got the new one in the mail yesterday, looks like the right one, but I won't know until the old one comes off and I can see if the bottom has the 7.25" radius or if it is flat. My friend decided to put off replacing it until it gets worse, right now it's having zero impact.

Just did a Wiki search for melamine out of curiosity. Interesting product. I always thought it was a type of or alternative to polycarbonate.

In my experience, new nuts always require some final fitting, and final adjustment of the nut slots to get the best playing action. You have the nut files to do that job, right?

Here are Ceri's instructions to fix a pre-cut nut

Scroll down to "Bluffer's nut files" section.

Many times a new nut is easiest to fit sanding the underside.
But, if the nut bottom is radiused (or like some Martins, angled), it's best to first fit the nut in place, then deepen the slots, finally sand the nut top to suitable height & polish if desired.
And, if in doubt, leave the job to a pro.

PS: 'Melamine' in here is the commonly used sales term for coated particle boards

I mean that in the region I live in, furniture/table top(/etc) boards made of "sawdust" (not exactly, exaggerating a little) & glue, coated with paper and melamine resin, are advertised, sold and commonly known as melamine boards. IKEA is one major user.

Edit: As in Rationell

Yesterday at shopping center I saw melamine dishes , plastic feeling .

Long time before guitar they made furniture with wood .
We start to build guitar with wood
We begin to use melamine on wood
Now we use melamine on guitar

Logical :D
